Hi guys i recently signed on into the rsaf as AFE(M) as i have a passion in aerospace engineering. Now Im starting to get worried based on the overseas detachments. Is the overseas detachment compulsory? As i really cant be away from my family and i dont want to be. Im also planning to get married at arnd 24. Is there any way to reject it when i start working? Or is there any way to end my contract now. Im still in AFTC for my 6months course.

you didn't realise this before signing on?

Why don't you ask the people who you were in touch with when you signed on?

Initially i was told that its optional but after signing on i realised it depends on the unit im posted to, wether my superior still needs more man to go even after people have volunteered to go. Thats why im here to get a regular's view on it for better understanding

I use to be a ex-regular in airforce. It really depends on the unit you are posted to and the requirements. I am not sure why you can't be away but I would say it is really a good opportunity if you ever have a chance to be posted overseas. The exposure and experience is immeasurable compared to staying in Singapore locally. It also helps in building up your CV for the future. Each stint is about 2 years generally. You would probably have to gain about 2 years experience before you will be considered. Hope it helps to clear some of your doubts :)

Hii thanks for the reply i really appreciate it. Actually the long term detachments later part in my career aint too bad as im looking to hopefully get married by then and bring my wife along. How about the short term deployments? Are there many deployments in a year and can i opt not to go?

For short term deployments... again it depends on unit requirements and the unit you are posted to. RSAF is operational 24hr a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. Be prepared. Once you sign on, it will be difficult to choose what you want to suit to your lifestyle. Your life belongs to the government and military. Just some advice and perspective.

If you opt not to go, how and what will your superiors think? What reasons will you provide? Unless it is critical, else I don't think any reasons is good enough because like I say, you are under government and military. Cheers.

Yup true. I understand what youre trying to say. My main concern about deployments are that im not sure if my family and my girlfriend can adapt to it and honestly me too. Other than would you be keen to share what career path did u take after leaving the rsaf?

I think it is part of life's journey and I am sure if your family and gf is supportive, they will support you. It is definitely tougher and more challenging at the beginning as you are expose to many different knowledge and requirement as part of your job. The key is to stay focus regardless of what your parents or gf say. They will understand (hopefully) when they see you making good progress.

I took a non-engineering path thereafter. I went into sales and marketing line related to coating products.
