Hi All,

Recently started playing Witcher 3.. with GTX 970 in 1080p and all ultra setting except hairworks and shadow...the fps is around 50-60fps.

I read around and one of the way to have better setting is to overclock it. I heard alot of benefit of overclocking (maximize the usage of GPU).

I have installed MSI afterburner...anyone have any guidance for overclocking with my computer spec -------->

Honestly, it would be substantially better for you to check out YouTube for MSI Afterburner-specific OC videos. You would also need benchmarking software like Unigine Valley or Heaven or Furmark.

also, you wont see a lot of jump in fps if your card is not underwater though. but can always try if you want.

1. Try increase core clock and mem clock without increasing voltage.

2. Then test with valley/heaven/firestrike to check if oc is stable.

3. If passes the benchmarking test successfully, can continue to push clocks. If oc is unstable, decrease clock speed or increase voltage slightly and test for stability again.

4. If not satisfied, increase core clock again and repeat steps 1-3.

Note that in games, it may not ultilise the highest clock speed tweaked.

If your driver crash in middle of run, may need to reset.

IMH, if u really dun know wad ur doing and feel 50/50 about ocing, then dont. theres always boost clocks though it will hit the thermal limit around 80c then throttle down.for u

This is what i usually do.

And this is how i oc my msi 970 g.e.

Increase memory clock first. Bit by bit. 30 at a time. Then from there run benchmark each time it pass, i will increase it.

Increase till the point where you start to see jittery box during benchmark then push down a little.

You do not really need to increase voltages for memory clocked.

Once you find your sucessful memory clocked, increase the base clock slowly. I do each time with an increase of 30 each time. Till i see drivers crash, then i will start to add the voltage slowly. Once each run sucessfully then increase base clock till it fails, and then try to downclock it if fails.

Do not staright put to maximum or straight 100hz clocked etc. It will risk damaging the gpu.

Slowly. Dont rush. Best do it on days off.

What's the base/memory/vol/power target of your max stable?

Just a heads up in case you follow and burn ur gpu... I did that before...

oh no worries I'm going thru the usual OC steps.

Just wondering what other people could push out there.

Read around, seems like memory clock can hit 7600 for the 970/980 considered good liao.

Power target just set max 108% this is the max nvidia set.

The rest are variable.

I've seen some people setting 125% to push base clock to 155X range

But I don't think I want to go there :s13:

I think I finalizing mine at 1400MHz base 8050MHz memory, 108% power with no overvolt.

correct me if i'm wrong but increasing power limit to max is still safer than increasing voltage.

Here are my OC settings.

I find out that there is no real impact to increase the memory clock after +170

Most benchmark shows that there is no increase in fps. So i just add on to 190. Yet to see any artifact.

Base clock strangely this new driver sux for NV. +190 it went unstable despite increasing voltages. So decided to keep it at +180. That will churn out a max clocked of 1530Mhz.

Using custom fan curve profile, and temps never breached 69deg. Fan speed at 69deg was at 75%.

EDIT: Its a MSI GTX970 4gb Golden Edition

I've been reading up around OC forums and ASUS's ROG forums about overclocking GPUs, it appears that for the lower resolutions like 1080p, overclocking the base clock have more impact than memory clock itself - when resolution gets higher, the memory clock would have more impact than base clock.

Kind of true for me when I bench at 1440p - both Heaven 4.0 and Firestrike showed better results with memory clocking (per step increment basis).

But your base clock is pretty good I guess. Not a lot of cards can breach 1500MHz base clock easily without stepping up voltage - mine at 1450MHz was not fully stable and 1475MHz will start to show jittery boxes in Heavens 4.0 already. So I went more conservative at clock it at 1400MHz but the memory clock was good - 8050MHz which was already over what ASUS said what the Strix series's usual range was (7600-8000MHz).

Wah your card is pretty good... My strix 980 could not push past 7800 MHz for memory clock. My base clock is currently at 1450 MHz too.

Boss you got a screeshot of your custom fan profile? Your card not underwater right? Pretty good temps there.

Give and take bah. My card is settling for 1400MHz only, 1450MHz will start to see nvidia driver crashing and 1475MHz is totally a nono due to artifacts showing, without stepping up voltages. I may have better memory clocks but you have better base clocks :s13:

I think cos the card cooler design good bah. Mine also - as long as no overvoltage stepping the card peaks at around 69c

He said his fan speed at 69c was 75%, same as mine. My custom fan profile configures 60.1c to 69.9c to spin the fan from 60%-79.9%

any idea how to fix the issue where my card goes into P2 state? it sets the mem clock at 3005mhz and i have to use nvidia inspector to manually change the clocks for p2 state. pretty irritating
