Dun fall for the fairy tales so easily can? Wait 50 years later, they will have fairy tales of how CCS and Jo Teo lead us out of Covid ok.

The simplest comparison is with HK. SG did progress but so did HK in the 70s and 80s.

Many things in SG that is haywire is rooted in the developments then.

We need to give credit where credit is due lah.

For instance, LKS was the man who spearheaded the HDB project. Without him, we could jolly be facing the same housing predicament as the HKers hor.

And GKS - deemed the “economic architect of Singapore" - was so capable that even China appointed him as its economic adviser.

In the early years of China’s economic reform programme, the Chinese central government sought Goh’s expertise and appointed him as its economic adviser on coastal development and tourism in 1985. He was the first foreigner to be appointed to such a role.

Exactly. In a balanced view, a lot of the rot that ppl slam the current pap for was started in his time leh.

Not saying he is bad. He is an intelligent and far sighted man but dunnid to fairy tales too much which is also what he wanted it seems.

I believe he's doing all this (GRC, high pay, etc) for you-know-who lor.. To ensure that the chosen one can 'tong' for as long as possible..

If I ask you to choose between (a very young) Ivan Lim and (the rather old) TCB to lead the country, who do you prefer?

Ivan? Since he's much much younger?

Leader can also rely on good talents to assist them, LKY alone wouldn't have made it without his old guards (GKS, TCC, LKS, etc). However, if leader himself is mediocre, and favours sycophants over true talents, then, whether the leader is younger, or older, does it make any difference?

There r many young talents who can lead. U just need to give them the spot light. Thats is the main reason wp won seng kang grc. Young jamus lim out shine much older ncm. The government sector has so many scholars i bet they can convince those high caliber young ppl to join pap.it seem the leaders of the gov is like its a dumping ground for retired saf generals, if we continue this kind of ladder system, most talented ppl wont wan to join pap since it would take forever to reach the top, they might as well work in private sector.

Can give credit but dunnid to lionise them or make them into fairy tales.

Well, from the other angle, the decaying lease also down to him which is a problem the current gen had to settle.

U see, the so called solutions of the 1G were starting from scratch with no negative history. this current batch dun have it good cause they are held accountable for what pap did in the past- like the decaying lease.

The decline started after pappies use $$$ as the reason to join politics and attracted those who are in it for $$$$.

Now lhl going to do the same to pritam.

If he can be that easily 'bought', he wouldn't have joined opposition in the first place. Given his calibre, had he joined PAP, he could jolly be one of the million-dollar minister liao.

But then why would someone like him wants to joined the ruling party.. and be a mere yesman?

The problem is then where do you place these generals.

1) If you let them stay in the military, you allow them to consolidate power within the military which could open up to possiblities of a miliatary coup

2) If you let them stay in the military, you will block the rise of younger officers who might mutiny due to lack of advancement.

3) If you let them rot after service, they may spread discontent and revolt.

4) I think can put them in the civil service or gahment but not in private sector GLCs or ministrys such as MTI.

Jamus is unproven hor. Dun say like he is the messiah.

Aren’t you speaking the obvious? Last time if you screw up, you will be kicked out. These days, due to lack of talent, even poor performing ones are kept.

Last time where got bringing in cronies from SAF, 1G, 2G, never seen before. See how many have they brought in. Quality is no longer the criteria.

Nepotism? Marrytocracy? Meritocracy?

You mean we should accept sub quality ministers just because we have no idea where to place these generals? Have you seen military coup in US? Or other countries where generals serve until 50s or 60s?

So did Jamus choose to join WP for the reason you suggest, ie he doesn't want to 'take forever to reach the top'?

I doubt so, it's not about that, its about the individual's belief, his conviction, and he choose the party whose ideology is closest to his own.

While being young does has its advantage (eg more energetic), but then you also need experience, experience that's accumulated over the years.

No lah, more likely, there really is nothing much for current batch to boast about and so, bo bian, have to keep relying on the (overused) past PAP 'track records' to win supports lor. :o

It’s no longer the old PAP of LKY-era.

The PAP IBs have contributed to this decline.

Actually i disagree strongly lah. A lot of the so called WP quality candidates would not have gotten into PAP even as backbencher.

1) Jamus Lim would have been butchered had he come in as PAP candidate with his half-elite background. RI RJ then Father mother scholarship then much of his life overseas. He would not have been accepted as PAP candidate.

2) Raessah khan is the dotter of one of the richest minority businessman in SG.

3) The same probably applies to HTR. Father-mother scholarship to cambridge for natural sciences degree which she then had the luxury to convert to law. Would a middle class sinkee from Sengkang have that luxury to go cambridge on father mother scholarship for natural sciences?

I am not saying that they are lousy or bad. But they would have failed the PAP bar and the only way they can run in an election would have been via the oppo ticket.

From what i see, PAP have usually avoid taking in such candidates because of the fear of being seen as elitist. As such they take in candidates who have humble background and ironically sengkang voted in 3 from luxury background aiming to be political elite.

Track record can be bad lah. Look at Liverpool. the legacy of history was so heavy for Steven Gerrard that he fell down.
