SINGAPORE: The People’s Action Party (PAP) on Wednesday (Aug 26) officially named its candidates for the Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for the imminent General Election (GE).
Joining the five-member GRC are animal rights activist Louis Ng and executive director Mr Henry Kwek, who has been a PAP activist in the Chong Pang ward under Nee Soon GRC for some years.
In the 2011 General Election, the PAP team beat the Workers’ Party (WP) by a 58.4 per cent majority, and will likely face a rematch with the same Opposition party this year.
The unveiling comes a day after Parliament was dissolved and the stage set for Nomination Day on Sep 1 and General Election on Sep 11.
The five PAP candidates for Nee Soon GRC are:
Mr K Shanmugam, 56, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Law
Mr Shanmugam was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Sembawang GRC from 1988 to 2006 before serving Nee Soon GRC from 2011. From 2010 to 2011, he was the Minister for Home Affairs. A lawyer by profession, he was one of the youngest Senior Counsels of the Supreme Court of Singapore, taking on the role in 1998 at the age of 38.
Dr Lee Bee Wah, 54, Group Director of Meinhardt Singapore
Dr Lee served as MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC from 2006 to 2011 before moving over to Nee Soon GRC. She is also the chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee for National Development and Environment. An engineer by trade, she was the president of the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) from 2008 to 2014.
Assoc Prof Faishal Ibrahim, 47, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Transport
An associate professor at the National University of Singapore’s Department of Real Estate, he served as an MP for Marine Parade GRC from 2006 to 2011 before moving to Nee Soon GRC.
Mr Louis Ng, 37, founder of Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES)
Mr Ng is the Chief Executive of Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES), a charity he founded when he was an undergraduate in 2001. Since then, he has led the organisation to one with an annual revenue of more than S$1 million in 2014.
He has also been a member of the Animal Welfare Legislation Review Committee and the Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration Committee since 2012, where he assisted in drafting the new animal protection legislation in Singapore.
Mr Ng has been volunteering in Nee Soon since 2008, and served in the Chong Pang grassroots organisation under Minister Shanmugam. He then went to help Minister Tan Chuan-Jin in Kembangan-Chai Chee and Mr Charles Chong at Joo Chiat before heading to Nee Soon East in August this year.
Mr Henry Kwek, 39, Executive Director of Foodtraco Supplies
Mr Kwek is an executive director at the homegrown investment, trading and management consulting company.
He also serves in the grassroots of two constituencies, Kebun Baru and Chong Pang. He works with Ground-Up Initiative - a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) focused on building sustainable communities.
The Chinese High School and Victoria Junior College alum was also a volunteer who taught at Kaki Bukit prison school in his younger days.
