Part Recommendation for DIY NAS

Hi, helping out a friend to source parts for DIY NAS. Will need some help for recommendations.

Only need
- CPU + Mobo
- RAM
- Case
- PSU

Requirements
- To fit x01 PCI-E Card for x04 SATA Port Expansion
- To fit x05 HDD + x02 SSD in Case
- Budget around $400-$500
- Only for data storage and transfers, no requirement for high CPU

YOu are looking for a J3455 motherboard and if that fails, an H110M + G4560
Casing you can use either Taobao Cheap Nas casings or like me, use the Lian Li Q25 which can fit 5x HDD and 3x more on the floor

IF your NAS does not involve access from the outside, go with the DIY NAS route
If you need to access fom the outside, share photo on android/IOS, go with Synology full stop.
Coz you will be getting your hand full helping your friend maintain his external connection to the NAS. Mucho easier to recommend Synology and configure for him...

true, i am not going to deny that. but to support that amount of disks i presume the cost will go way higher

apologies, i am not here to create trouble.
Thanks i will take a look at the urls.
J3455 mobo only has 2 Sata Ports, which means i need multiple cards to support his hdd qty needs.

Software will be handled by himself, i am only sourcing parts for him.
As far as requirements goes, i only understand that it is for file storage.

I will also need to check if he is comfortable with overseas hardware purchase, as warranty will be limited.

Thanks for the recommendation, but the mobo only supports x02 Sata Ports, meaning the expansion card will need to support at least x05 ports, i think quite rare right? usually is only x02 - x04 ports only.

trying to find more info on that PSU, what factor is it called? (Flex1U or?)
kinda worried if need replacement may be troublesome.

if the above matches, the number of supported sata power connectors is limited. (even if add in molex converters, which causes fire easily?)

Converters can cause fire IF very high voltage is passed through it
HDDs are not there yet. but Graphic cards are...

NAS cards beyond 4 ports are available. You can go Storage Studio but if other shops, look for brands like Promise....

Back in my first few server builds i did a 20 HDD solution into a Lian Li V2000 casing with 2x 8 port Raid cards running off a Silverstone PSU.
I think i still have the pictures somewhere but it was more like
1x Sata Splitter per 2 hdd ( That means 10 wires ), going into 5 Y splitters to the PSU.
Definitely lots of converters.

As the system integrator, you will be responsible for the quality of his built up equipment, so just go according to how you feel like it.

If you don't want converters, choosing a PSU with flat wires will be wise.

The Q25 accepts standard ATX PSUs, which are readily available, come cuter than others...

Perhaps mine was very poor quality, cause i had mine fried, along with my HDDs.
Okays I will take note of the NAS Cards.

Because he currently own 1 card already but it is only x02 port. And he wishes to use it.
