Hi all!

Is anyone currently in PSB Academy - UWA Bachelor of Art (Communication Studies) Part time or SIM - RMIT Bachelor of Communications (Mass Communications) Part time? Am also considering SMF/Kaplan for Murdoch and MDIS OCU.

I'm a Ngee Ann Polytechnic FSV graduate and am currently freelancing. I would like to further my education and broaden my knowledge, thus looking to apply for part time degrees. Flexibility and content of degree is most important to me.

Please do post if you have any experiences in any part time communication degrees!

Hi,

I am currently studying Bachelor of Communication from Murdoch University at SMF Institute of Higher Learning.

In my humble opinion, the Murdoch University programme is unsuitable for you. Since you graduated from the FSV programme, I am under the assumption that your talent and interests lie in production. Most communication courses are more theoretical and focus on areas such as communication theory, corporate communications, public relations, journalism and media studies.

Have you considered the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Producing from Chapman University? I have a few friends who graduated from FSV and went on to Chapman.

Hope it helps!
Cheers!

Hi Kvicez!

Thanks for your reply, and yes the common route would be to finish up my degree with Chapman University. Unfortunately, Chapman University's contract with Ngee Ann Poly has been completed and is not accepting anymore students until further updates.

My aim in my graduate studies is to broaden my knowledge in Mass Communication for more job security, in case I would like to switch from the production industry in the future. My FSV diploma has given me more than enough production knowledge. :)

How has your experience in Murdoch been? Are you doing full time or part time?

I see... Thanks for the update on Chapman! :)

Have you considered what you would like to switch to if you decide to give up production? Mass communications is a very broad industry and covers many different fields. Are you interested in journalism, public relations or research? Maybe you can list down your areas of interest so that I can better advise you.

I've completed most of my studies full-time and am completing my last module as a part-time student. Overall, my experience with Murdoch has been positive. As I did not have any prior communications background, I learnt a lot about communications and public relations.

I had my fair share of good and bad lecturers; the good ones were really good, with strong industry background and can build rapport with the students really well. The bad ones.. let's just say there was one who was really so terrible, I try to avoid her if possible.

Nonetheless, I realized that what's going on in the industry is really different from what school has prepared me for, but school has been a very good preparatory phase.

From what I've heard, the UWA programme is rather good, though it covers a little on everything instead of focusing on one major. Also, I didn't choose to study the UWA programme as I was from JC. The UWA programme required me to do a diploma and another advanced diploma before I can do the degree programme, which was far too long.

I've never really heard anything much about RMIT's communication programme, while most people avoid MDIS for degrees. MDIS is great for diplomas, but there are better degree programmes out there. You can consider SIM-UB, PSB-UWA, SMF/Kaplan-Murdoch and Curtin University. The SIM-UB programme is really expensive but not bad. The programme at Curtin University is a direct course; it is offered by Curtin at its overseas campus in Singapore and there are no private school partners. However, I heard that they are planning to withdraw the communications programme in Singapore so you might want to check that out.

Hope it helps!
Cheers!
