Part-time degree for shift job workers?

Hi all, I am currently working as a shift worker. The shift goes by 2 PM shift(2pm-10pm) then 2 AM shift(8am-4pm), followed by 2 days off. The cycle will repeat it self, meaning it will coincide with weekends.

Are there any education institutes out there that allow part-time degree and allow me to freely book my lessons?

Unfortunately to say, there isn't an institution that offers "flexibility" till such extend.

Most private institutions hold their evening lessons between 7-10pm. Depending on the size of the institution (I.e. SIMGE) which offers morning and afternoon schedules as well.

The actual schedule, I am unable to advise you as it is not fixed and changes from year to year for most institutions per se.

Given your schedule, about half the time, you will probably be missing your lectures and have to clash lectures quite a fair bit, which is supposingly not allowed.

But if that is fine with you and you want to work your way around it, go ahead with it.

I know of some schools where they have weekend intensive classes that runs on Friday to Sunday. Typically 2 intensive classes per course which spread or 3 to 4 months.

If you are able to schedule your shift work so that u are off duty follow by off on these days, it might work out for you. Hope this helps.

TS is working on the basis of a 6-day week, instead of the usual 7 we are associated with. Although there are courses that goes over the weekends, but sometimes these will clash as our normal "weekend" is not the same as TS's.

IMO there are 2 ways to go about this - (1) either TS make some shift arrangements based on the timetable with his supervisor, or (2) go for own study via distance learning (a very good e.g. UOL International programs). I have a few friends who are on shift work doing part-time studies and they went for option (1).

You could do option (2), but it will take strict discipline and lots of reading. Still, it can be done, since many people had gone through it.

I'm in shift work too. Taking RHUL PT at Kaplan. All lectures are online. Only workshops need to attend as there's graded presentations. What I do is to take leave for weekend workshop and exams. For evening workshops, I'll go back to work after class.

I was in a similar dilemma as u. I chose to sacrifice all my leaves for studies. U may have to make similar compromises too. Truth be told, get an office hour job. A degree is no walk in the park, even for private ones, getting home after night shift and still putting in 3-4 hours for assignments is really tiring.

There's some significant differences between doing UOL on your own and RHUL at Kaplan, one is 3yrs, the other is 1.5yrs. One is an external program while the other is internal. One has no interaction with tutors and no alumni membership while the other gives u that. The costs are nearly the same when u add up all the materials.
