i bought a 4tb WD red a while ago and created 2 partitions and
formatted it in a vantec USB 3.0 dock. the other remaining partition was not formatted
as the first 2TB partition took 17hrs to format using USB, left it as unformatted.

Yesterday, since my first 2tb was getting full, i decided to format the 2nd partition,
as usb really takes longer than internal formatting i decided to connect it to my internal sata port to format.

i disconnected my existing wd 500 gb and use cable to connect to the 4TB.my bootdrive is a 120gb sata ssd.

when boot, i can see the 2nd partition which i formatted. however, the first partition was there but when tried to
access it said cannot read, so i suspected something not right.

When i put the 4TB back into my USB dock, it said the 4tb drive needs to be initialised!!!
i did not proceed as scared for the data....

after few tries, i could see the two partitions in disk management but they show as unallocated!!!

i tried EaseUs partition recovery, minitool recovery, testdisk but they do not seem to be able to find any partition
and tries to search for files (seemed like it goes to deep scan)...

Did not think by plugging the drive into internal sata can cause such disaster... i did it before for other drive without issue....
Am also not sure if i created the partitions as GPT originally(i think so)....

Anyone can help to give some advice.... am trying to use non-destructive way to recover first, just reading off...

If i create volume from the unallocated space, all data will be gone correct?

The disk is healthy almost brand new, the partition should be there but cannot understand how it happened like that...

Any other tool i can try? :(:(:(
Please help if anyone has some experience on this kind of issue.

drive is not visible in my computer when in usb dock.

when i was formatting the 2nd partition when i connect to internal sata, i could see partition 1 but said cannot unreadable error, not permission denied error... anyway, i have not put back the drive in internal sata again .. trying to see if can recover something from usb dock first..

not sure why drive partition got messed up by plugging into internal sata.. \

again thanks for your reply...

On hindsight, you should format both partitions using quick format for a new drive.

Missing many vital information to narrow or attempt to fix the problem.

1) You need to be certain the 4TB is using GPT or MBR and what is the exact volume allocation on the 1st and 2nd partitions.

2) Which motherboard are you using on this desktop, with or without UEFI.

a) If UEFI present, did you saw the 4TB in the UEFI

b) If no UEFI, ignored a)

3) What O/S and service pack (if any) are you using to format the 2nd 2TB partition.

4) Did you tried Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows? If no, please try and update us on the outcome.

5) The exact model of the WD HDD

Sorry. here are the info as much as i know.

1) i think it is GPT (i cannot recall 100%). first partition 2000MB, second is remaining space, both partition shows unallocated with those sizes currently in Disk Managment

2) P5Q asus Core2Duo e8400

2a) No UEFI in this old mobo bios. actually i know need UEFI to be able to boot from partition > 2tb, if not boot, no need UEFI (not sure)

3)Win 7 32bit SP1 ultimate

4) Did not try the WD tool as scared it alters the state by trying to autorepair and do thing worse. i can download it to try...

5) Wd Red WD40EFRX.

anyway, i have not put back the drive in internal sata again .. trying to see if can recover something from usb dock first..
.

So can I say that you ran the recovery software through the usb? Try running it when attached through Sata then.
