Hi guys

My girlfriend enjoys writing and she is thinking of venturing this hobby and eventually be a full time writer of sorts. Currently, she publishes articles in her blog, but isn't very active. She is thinking of pursuing her passion, but she doesn't know where to start.

I have done a google search and it seems like the Singapore writing scene isn't as established (correct me if I am wrong). I am looking for avenues for her to publish her work, say for magazines, established travel/food blogs that require part time writers, etc.

Can anyone recommend me how do I go about this? I apologise for being ignorant as I don't know where to start. Perhaps some advice would be great.

Thanks

Blogging can be a good start. Perhaps she can also try to venture into private label rights (PLR) ebooks. With these , the production of content will be much quicker because she can just modify PLR content .

Writing (online) for money isn't as lucrative now, I think. Since SOOOOOO many people are doing it. But for a start, your GF might like to try hubpages.com

Once she gets the hang of the market, and this takes time, consider self-publishing E-books for sale on Amazon etc.

Hi there!

Great to hear your GF is looking to nurture her passion for writing!
The Singapore writing scene may not be large but they're definitely growing together with the more visible local arts practitioners such as stage actors etc.

A few things I can suggest off the top of my head are:
1) Participate in the Singapore Writers Festival - annual event. I met a whole bunch local writers I never knew and an even bigger bunch of writers-in-training. join the workshops or even just network with the person sitting next to you!

2) Join the Sg Writers Group on meetup.com, where your GF can get feedback and support

3)say hello to Screenwriters Association or (if your GF's interests is more general) Society of Singapore Writers. There'll be lots more specific pointers from any of the above support groups once she Asks :)

Hi there,

First of all, good on you for helping your girlfriend with this: I think your support will be very important to her!

If she is looking to make a living off writing, and is not particular about what she writes, I might also suggest business/ copy-writing. It's not exactly the stuff hobbies are made of, but it is the most feasible way to monetize one's writing skills, I think.

Hey man,

Maybe you could try looking for jobs in those specific areas? I was in her shoes awhile ago and I realized that even though writing is my hobby, I didn't have any real credentials to 'back up' my writing skills sets or prove it otherwise(especially in singapore where your credentials are key). So, I went to gain some foothold and understanding of this industry by becoming an editorial intern.

Not sure if this will help.
Cheers
