Pc build for video editing

I recently build a gaming rig for myself and now my brother-in-law is asking me to help him build a rig for video editing. I know nuts about what video editing needs. So here is what i came up and need your help to tell me what i need to change to make gis video editing a smooth experience... budget around $1500 i suppose

Price based on PC Themes:
CPU: Ryzen 5 1600
Mobo: Gigabyte AB 350 Gaming
Bundle: $421

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2 x 4GB ($165)
HDD: WD Blue 1TB ($89)
SSD: Samsung Evo 850 250GB ($149)
PSU: Seasonic M12II Modular 620W ($115)
GPU: ZOTAC GTX 1060 3GB AMP ($375)
Case: Tecware Vision: $109

Total: $1,423

Note: Will be using stock cooler as not going to overclock cause i dunnoe how to

Everyday, average of 1hr of video footage... His PC just up lorry so thats y he is looking for a new 1...

Why is there a need for a $375 GPU when there isn't 3D editing involved?

As much as you can possibly stuff.

There is no fix value. Remember people edited in 32-bit days and 4GB limit oo.

Most video editing does not utilize the GPU.

Even the 3D part is mostly CPU.

That's why AMD so happy to show of the power of more cores in Ryzen.

if you're not intending to play any games whatsoever, i think a gtx 1050ti would be sufficient. i'm also considering between that and the gtx 1060. i think it's what the pc is for and ultimately your budget if you intend to future proof it?

There isn't graphics onboard the Ryzen CPU (except 2200G & 2400G).

There are 4 alternatives...

(1) Stick with current choice...

(2) Slow down to 4 cores with Ryzen 2200G/2400G with integrated graphics. You will take x1.5 processing time to get a job done as video editing scale perfectly with multi cores. But you will save so much money ( at least $500... enough for an entry level 27" 4K monitor) that you can use it for huge amount of ram and a nice huge monitor which would add to productivity (working would be more enjoyable).

(3) Current choice but with a entry level GPU... which are still at outrageous prices like $150 for a 2GB Nvidia 1030.

(4) Go intel Coffeelake 6 core CPU like the i5-8400 with integrated GPU. The CPU+motherboard bundle would be around $500? Enough savings for a 27" 4K monitor.

Just a substitute for whatever video editing software...

We added a new software title to the benchmark suite, Magix Vegas Pro. This professional video editing software Vegas Pro is a video editing software package for non-linear editing. Originally developed as an audio editor, it eventually developed into an NLE for video and audio from version 2.0. Vegas features real-time multitrack video and audio editing on unlimited tracks, resolution-independent video sequencing, complex effects and compositing tools, 24-bit/192 kHz audio support, VST and DirectX plug-in effect support, and Dolby Digital surround sound mixing. Up to version 10, Vegas Pro runs on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 and is multi-threaded. For our benchmark session, we output towards XAVC S Long 3840x2160 - 59.94p, a very heavy encode. Video card assisted encoding is disabled. This is a real-world test, not a synthetic one and is based on our own content and preferences. We take a two-minute game recording, add an audio track. The content is created with that new audio-track mixed in there as well as applying two video fp32 enhancement filters for contrast and sharpening.

If processing speed isn't that big a deal, (2) would be best as you save only 5mins on a heavy encode nia what. What are the chances his tasks are just as demanding?

If it is, (4) is the best.

Yes, cores are king when it comes to the specific usage of the planned rig, but it might be more sensible to balance out the different aspects?

1hr of footage everyday is quite alot actually
1hr = 35gb +/- = 50gb
1 month = 50*30 = +/- 2tb
Means your 8tb can last you tops 6 months before he come back to complain how come your pc space so small.....

So casing BIG casing that can fit 4x HDD at least ( In case kiasu need 2 years of storage, ESPECIALLY IF UNCLE IS THE NAGGY KIND )

Basically this.

For hobbyists, anything will work. (Even iOS products lol)

For professionals, they won't be asking questions.

That's a lot, does he keeps his footage or just delete them after he finished the project.

Get at least 500gb ssd for current os, program and work folder.

Hdd depends on how often he keeps his footage. If he clean up often 2tb are alright, but if he doesn't will needs more.

Like other mentioned, If he doesn't needs gpu, might just consider intel coffelake i5 / i7 with 16gb.
