PC Build Help Needed!

Hi all,

I'm looking to build a PC with a budget of 1200-1300 from SLS. Built a budget PC 6 years ago and now's the time to change things up. I have written down some of the requirements I'm looking for, and also have a few old parts i might be able to reuse.

CPU:i5-8400
MOBO:Not sure which to get
SSD:M.2 250GB which brand should I get?
RAM:I have a 1333MHZ DDR3 Kingston 8GB, should I get a DDR4 2400MHZ?
GPU:Looking at ASUS 6GB DUAL O.C
PSU:I need a quiet one as computer is left on for most of the day. Seasonic S12ii 520W?
CASE:I have a Sharkoon MS140, not sure if need to change up
OS:I have a Windows 7 Home Prem 64bit. Do I need to get Windows 10?

Hmm its for normal everyday surfing and mid-intensive gaming. I'm intending to use it for long term which is why I wouldn't mind spending a little out of budget to ensure that it will be stable/wont spoil etc. Impt part is that it should be able to withstand almost 24/7 usage and not be noisy..

Get a better PSU. EVGA g3 550W is at $109 now on lazada.

Spoil is see heng suay. Long term is see heng suay. As such, most of us here build to your requirements not how long any item last. So tell us specifically what games you are playing/want to play as that's where the pricey items are not web surfing.

Alright I understand whr u're coming from. The most graphic intensive game I'm playing would be Overwatch. However, I'm open to more titles in the future which is why I'm gunning for a 1060 instead of 1050.

As of now, I'm quite set on i5-8400 and 1060, however I'm not sure which mobo and gfx brand to get. Thr's some shops in SLS selling i5 cpu+mobo combos for $300+ while shops like tradepac cheapest combo would be $453. Do I need such a good mobo?

U can actually just aim to get a 3/4th gen mobo and an i7 respective to the generation, 3770, 4770, 4790. This would still be relevant in today’s usage, and some would be selling these at a relatively affordable price to upgrade. You would be able to save on ddr4 in that way, though I would say snag another ddr3 8gb to bring it to a total of 16gb.

Reasons people often give, room for future upgradability. If it’s for normal usage, please la most people don’t bother upgrading, and at most it’s usually targeted at GPU since it’s the easiest to swap (plug and play) and it’s the one that has the greatest impact on games (with the exception of the few that are CPU bound)

PSU wise, can consider FSP hyper K 500/600W, 500 would be more than enough but if you cringe at having Low PSU numbers, go for the 600W. It has shitty cables TBH, but nonetheless it’s working fine for me. No overclocking done so it’s still pretty handy for a budgeted build.

you dont really need a expensive mobo, difference between an expensive and cheaper mobo is only the price, more features (that most probably you wont use) and maybe better materials used? No performance or fps increase from using an expensive motherboard for your case since no overclocking cannot be done on your processor of choice. but even if u were using a K processor, the overclock headroom of an expensive mobo vs an average mobo is minimal, in my opinion not worth to spend the extra dollars.

Save the money to get a better graphic card or processor that will affect your gaming performance.
