Hi guys, I'm planning to get a new setup and roughly chose these parts.. Have my own SSD and HDD already. Prices are based on PC Theme price list.

Usage will be mostly for work and Dota 2. I need something that can last hopefully 3 ~ 5 years. Which parts should i change to bring down budget to around 1.1k to 1.2k?

I would say...

- Get a better CPU cooler, the stock Intel one is bad
- The price for the MSI is about right, but I suggest a bit more for a second hand 1070 or 1080 for future proofing. 1060 is entry level liao. Also, a Zotac/Galax 1060 6GB is about 430 SGD, so you save almost 100 SGD.
- I suggest 2x8GB RAM - getting only 8GB RAM is bad for future proofing.
- The Phanteks has bad airflow, it really is "looks over function"

Drop the i5 8500 to i3 8100. Or even consider 2200G. It should be good for dota 2.
Drop the 1060 6gb to 1050Ti. If going with AMD cpu, then no need another gpu le. But u will still have the option to add a gpu in if your gaming needs increases.
Get a 240gb ssd if you can.
Change to EVGA G3 psu.
Get a 1080p monitor if u dun have one.
Get a minimum of 8gb ram, either in 2x 4gb or 1x 8gb. If you are using itx mobo, get a 1x 8gb stick for future expansion possibility.

This is rubbish advice.
1. For non overclocked system, stock cooler are fine.
2. You don't need a 1070 for dota2. Even a 1050 give you >100 fps at best setting.
3. Future proof is rubbish as well. There is no such thing.

That may be your opinion. I have mine. To me, your advice is rubbish and he'll need to upgrade sooner and spend more $.

Agree with point one and two. As for point 3, with current gen being so "old" already, there's no point to futureproof as new gen is rumored so be released early next year..unless ts is in a rush to get the performance.

What I mean is that there is no reasonable way to future proof a rig which is already intended to last 5 yrs. If it already lasted 5 yrs, it is probably 2 gen behind and unlikely to be useful for an upgrade except of the most basic sort like drop in a newer CPU (which is actually old gen).

Go for a matx mobi, can consider the msi b360m bazooka. Rams if that’s your stated workload and simply D2, a single 8gb stick would be sufficient. Don’t need get higher clock speeds as it’s intel platform. Retain stock cooler. GPU you can get a 1050ti, no need a 1060 3gb. But ultimately depends on your resolution you are gaming at. For the case, can get a tecware nexus M. Can get it at quite a decent price. Just note this is literally a basic case. Ketchup wires can be seen even if cable management if done properly as there really isn’t anywhere to hide except in the PSU shroud and air flow for the case is mediocre.

Get a 120gb SSD for boot drive, and a 500gb or whatever sized hdd that is suited for your usage.

But as most people recommend, get a 1050Ti to drop your budget from a 1060 6GB.

Aiyo, for dota 2 and simple ms office work no need spend so much on a gtx 1060 or a gtx 1050 ti la. Go for a simple ryzen 2200g with the vega 8 graphics and a simple 8gb ddr4 ram good enough for dota 2 already. If going intel i3 8100 with gt 1030 good enough.

Dota 2 is very basic very low demanding game. Don't waste money on gtx 1060 or 1050 ti. The gpu prices now are very bad and you are paying ridiculous prices for the age old 2 year old tech gpus now with nvidia not releasing their gpu.

The gtx 1050 ti prices now are equivalent to a gtx 1060 3gb prices way back before the mining craze. 1060 3gb can be bought at $266, but now $266 can only get you a gtx 1050 ti its pathetic. For local prices la but for overseas prices might be better not sure. Local price always chop carrot one.
