PC can't power up

This happened to my friend's PC. It seems very difficult to power up, and may need to unplug and plug in the power cable to boot. Even when boot to windows, it randomly crashes. Something I noticed is if I left the side panel open, it didn't crash. Or I might just be lucky. Though a normal intel burn test brings temp up to 70+ with the side panel open and eventually crashes. The PC is about 6 years old, and I'm thinking that the Psu is dying. Any other ideas?

i think you should check visible connections and the status of the capacitors. If you have a spare PSU you might want to do the switch and try on the other one.

Connections seems ok. Didn't check the caps though. Have a spare PSU but it was at home, it was an impromptu visit and I didn't bring it along. Any other ideas?

Dying PSU is a possibility already covered by dinosau4.

CPU could be another. Clean up the thermal paste on the CPU and re-seat it.

Using stock HSF I'm guessing? Clean it up if it's dirty. But if it has been 6 years, the HSF may not be as efficient as before. Try using another HSF or cooler too.

PC of 6 years probably a combination of stuff that's expiring at the same time. Don't expect too much out of it liao.

It's a prebuilt pc, and they have changed the heatsink at least once, though the replacement one was nothing fantastic. I also told her it could be a combination of things, with the psu probably being the major prob. Convinced her to build a new one, just that no one in the family wants to fork out for one. lol.
