PC Clock Always Wrong

My Notebook's PC clock recently started to act up. On boot the time will be wrong and sometimes when I set it correctly it will randomly jump forward a few hours

I've tried:

• Synchronizing with windows time server
• Synchronizing with other time server
• Ensuring the timezone is accurate
• Creating a windows scheduled task to sync the clock on startup

All the fixes above fix the problem right now but the error will come back the next day

I noticed a few things about it:

• I doubt its a CMOS battery failure because the clock on boot is always 13-14 hours behind, indicating the PC is syncing to USA time
• When I do the manual sync it will always indicate an error syncing to the windows servers

My OS: Win 7 Pro SP1

What can I do? Its driving me crazy

Did you set your windows region to usa?

Usually is the motherboard battery having problem as the battery help to retain data saved in the CMOS.

Try to change the motherboard battery and problem should go away.

Check the time and region in your BIOS,.. the BIOS is the primary source upon boot-up so if that is set wrong then you will have this headache!

The battery is weak , that is why causing date and time error. If the battery is dead , you cannot even bootup at all.

Not that straightforward nowadays. I have a PC that clock just stop when you remove the AC power.

Also syncing will fail if your values are too off, like half a day.

When cmos battery is weak, it doesn't go to 00:00, it retains the time that it was last switched on. And since it is weak, it goes haywire hence the inaccurate timing.

This is quit sure the cmos battery is weak. If not, the clock chip has some issue.

When AC is apply to pc, there is a 5v standby voltage always running.

Likely cmos battery. Which laptop model is it? I noticed you are still on windows 7 so I'll just assume it is more than 5 years old?

Just a word of caution, some laptop cmos batteries comes wrapped together with the wires and connector in a standalone set, so it's best to search your laptop model before looking for a replacement.

Yes correct, either get a same type or need some soldering skill.

Called Dell like a goondu and they say want to change battery have to order new motherboard, really damn **. I initially thought they joking sia

Now I guess I have to search around lazada/shopee

Not necessary to buy new one. If you are willing to go the DIY route, cut by the side using pen knife (one side will do), you be able to slip the battery out.

Basically both positive and negative wires are with a metal strip that are soldered onto the CR2032 battery. Identify which wire is positive or negative according to the battery.

Use the pen knife or brute force and slowly tear off the metal strip from the battery without damaging the strip such that it breaks off from the wire.

To reattach, just use electrical black tape or kapton tape.

Yes. It should be this way. Sometime is due to certain program ran set to specific region other then singapore.

I am having issues with auto sync clocks on 2 of my Window devices as well. My laptop for example when set to KL timezone, somehow will pick up date and time in US. Today I also noticed that my clock on my desktop is like 30 mins slower. Initially I thought something is wrong with my clock, but when I validate it on my phone, the problem is with the desktop clock.

In both cases, I did not bother trying to get them to sync again. Just set it to manual and adjust the date and time accordingly.
