Hi Everyone

My PC crashed, and now i'm looking to build a new one. However, is it possible to run my OLD SSD with OS installed in the new PC? I like to obtain some files back from the OLD SSD. I have some questions about this
  1. It was a AMD build, do I need to have AMD in order to run that SSD?
  2. In the new PC, can i just slot in the Nvme and run it as per normal since it's already with OS?
Thank you so much

I use the same SSD with my OS on my new Mobo + CPU without issues. But it might have to run Windows Repair option to allow it to scan your new Mobo's way of booting up and see what hardware is attached to it. And then done. No need for fresh Windows reinstall with the risk of deleting my files and programs in it. But you might need to have an external USB with the Windows Repair thing to make it work. I can't remember.

But it was seamless to convert from Z170 to Z390 to now Z790 platform for me.

If the new PC has already a SSD with Windows installed.
You can insert the SSD into another slot and backup the files.
If there's no Windows on the new PC than you can use Kasperky rescue CD.

https://support.kaspersky.com/krd18

Is a bootable linux OS so you can access the files inside.
PS as much as some say old SSD with old Windows can be reused on new PC.
It is always recommended to do a fresh installation of Windows.

As different motherboard have different components especially the SATA/NVME controller.
Unless it is exact motherboard than you can reused the old WIndows.
Windows may work but it will only be temporary, when you face blue screen, slowdown
and random crash than have to do a clean install.

Clean install of Windows at the most take 2/3 hours, is not like if you do Windows 7
which can take a day.

windows 11 and 10 can work this way. or you buy an external usb adaptor to your OLD ssd.

But one thing you should never do, is to put your OLD ssd in secondary slot, put in a NEW ssd in first slot and install windows into it.

This will cause boot up problems with two windows boot loaders. :o
