PC keeps freezing on windows 10

Hi all requiring some help here,

My pc keeps freezing randomly at certain points. I have to do a hard reset to it, even the keyboard caps lock and num lock wouldnt work.

I have checked and even replaced the RAM sticks. (I encountered this once before, removed one ram stick and after that it worked fine, and now its back, but i bought a new ram stick, stuck it in, and the problem is still there)

The PC would even freeze when I am not doing anything to it. Not gaming or whatsoever.

I have updated all my drivers to the latest drivers. Im on the windows 10 creator's update if that helps.

Would be really grateful if anyone can give me some help here.

Notebook? Can be many reasons:

1) Does this PC/notebook support Windows 10?
2) How old is it?
3)
- If PC/notebook support Windows 10, have you load the correct driver
for it?
- If PC/notebook does not support Windows 10, you have
to let Windows 10 install the driver on it own.
Most of Windows 8.1 and older driver Win 10 will update it
automatically which may cause issue.

I am suspecting that your PC maybe doesn't support Win 10
especially the driver loaded maybe causing issues.
Another way to troubleshoot freezing is roll back to the previous OS.

If still freeze, you will have to troubleshoot further.

yes my PC supports windows 10, i have been using it with no issues until recently.

PC is around 2.5 years old.

I am certain i have installed all the correct drivers.

i dont know what to do anymore as of this point.

maybe i'll try a system restore tonight.

so now ur using 1 new ram stick only? or 1 new + 1 old ram stick?

have you updated to your laptop from a previous window version(eg: win7/8) to windows 10 before?

Yea sorry, I was trying to say PC in general instead of laptop.

Here's a scenario I faced; My dad's laptop was from windows 7 and because he isn't a computer literate, he just says ok to everything thus the laptop updated to windows 10 from there.

Since then the laptop performed really poorly and has short freezes. Since then, I have uninstalled all his drivers, certain applications(anti-virus) and reinstalled them with the windows 10 compatible drivers.

so far he hasn't have any problems.

Explanation: in a nutshell, Some windows 7 drivers does not properly translate to the new OS(win10) thus you get freezes.


Basically you download the windows 10 drivers for example: like your mobo chipset or LAN card...etc. Then you uninstall the current one; restart if you have to, then install the windows 10 one.


You might want to try this. If it still doesn't work. I would say a fresh format of windows 10 is the best result.

Just do a clean install of win 10. The drivers will get installed automatically in most cases. In case there's a missing driver download them from the manufacturers support page.

Hi all, i might have found the cause, for some reason my disk was running at 100%

I googled and found a solution by disabling superfetch from the command prompt.

I am not sure what is that though and not sure why is my disk running at 100% even at startup.

still troubleshooting to see if it still freezes.

technically you need to uninstall to avoid conflicts.

1) how many storage device do you have? eg: 1 ssd, 1 hdd
2) which one is the affected drive (eg: HDD; D:.)
3) is the drive partitioned? yes/no?

I'm taking a guess that most likely it's a HDD and you only have 1 drive.
If this is the case, you might want to consider buying SSD. It's really cheap now and would be a beneficial upgrade for your PC.

Not only that, you can do a fresh install onto that SSD and then slowly transfer data from the "damaged" HDD

"damaged" could be either hardware(bad sectors...etc) or the software(drivers, app...etc)

We will advice after knowing the answered questions

1 storage device HDD
C drive
its a 1tb partitioned into C and D drive 500 gb each

Maybe i'll run a defrag tonight.

After disabling superfetch i havent tested it thoroughly, or rather havent encountered any freezes. If the freezes occur again i'll most probably do a clean install of windows 10.

And yes thank you for the SSD advice i guess its time to look for one.

If you are running conventional hdd, it is not a good idea to disable superprefetch.
Read here : Disable Superfetch & Prefetch for SSD in Windows 10/8/7

However you may want to consider this "Disable Diagnostic Tracking in Windows 10". Check point #7.

A feature that you might have otherwise disabled for privacy reasons, it has been blamed for 100% HDD use on many PCs.
