PC randomly reboots

Dear forumers,

Recently, my PC began to suffer from bouts of random reboots. It usually occurs after about an hour of usage. My screen just goes black as if the power has been cut, no BSOD or any warning, then the system just restarts after a few seconds. Usually after it reboots once, the more likely it is to reboot again (ie the reboots come in bouts)

I tried reseating the RAM, checking voltage/temp parameters but all seems normal. I haven't been able to isolate the problem. My PC is a DIY about a year old with the following specs:

Mobo: MSI H110i Pro AC
CPU: Intel i3-6100
PSU: Seasonic S12G 450W
SSD: Samsung 850EVO 250GB
RAM Kingston 8GB

The reboots occurred during light usage (web browsing, word/excel documents). I would really appreciate any help to resolve this issue. Many thanks!

which windows? got try memtest?

before you continue, turn off auto restart after BSOD to see if got BSOD message but is too fast to display

can try a stress test on your system, might be cause of overheat on the cpu, thus the pc suddenly shutdown
check if the temp is high, if high, can try to reapply the termal paste

Thanks for all the feedback. The rebooting problem seems to be getting more frequent. I ran memtest last night and it rebooted during memtest to windows. Otherwise, the memtest reported no errors. The PSU readings on HWmonitor seem fine, all within the +-5%. Max cpu temp was 60. I enabled bsod message and turned off auto restart but the screen still just goes black. Think it might be a mobo problem

it could be any of the parts. have experienced serious cases of pc rebooting / freezes / BSOD in the past. it's all due to defective ram. suggest use new ram to test the pc.

Was having similar problem last month and it will auto reboot after using for an hours or two. After the initially reboot need to wait for a while before can use normally for an hour then the process repeat again. Memtest test and PSU readings on HWmonitor all seem fine and turned off Win10 auto restart. Removed PSU and tested it with paperclip and all seem working.

In the end, open up the Seasonic psu and found a 470Uf 400V bloated capacitor. Maybe the psu or motherboard sensed a surge and auto reboot it. Faster go borrow a psu and test it. Don't end up like me until the motherboard also dead

If temps and voltages are ok, the cpu is unlikely to be an issue. U did memtest so memory is ok. No bsod---software issues possible but slightly less likely(test at the end of still can't find out what's wrong). PSU needs testing. Voltages ok but no info on current. If psu got no problem, then check mobo.

I appreciate all the feedback so far! I guess I'll get another PSU to test it out. Curiously though, it only reboots when windows is loaded, while I was in bios or the blue troubleshooting screen it did not reboot.. Can a system reboot while still in bios?

Try looking in Event Viewer and see if it states any identifiable error there. Such issue quite hard to pinpoint without trial and error troubleshooting. I had encountered this exact issue multiple times over different PCs in the past. One time was faulty Plextor SSD, one time was PSU going to fail, one time was faulty USB device, and one time was updated to new USB driver then the issue occur, rolled back to old driver problem solved.

If you have added any new device or updated any new drivers, I think that's the first place you should look at. If it's component, got to admit, quite a pain to troubleshoot if you don't have spare one on hand.
