PC start-up problem

Hi guys, my PC has problem in start-up properly. Sometimes, when i press power-up botton, chassis fan and cpu fan are on, motherboard lights on (diagnosis light not on, i.e. no error code), but chassis power light is not on. It will remain like this forever if i dun do anything.

If I force shutdown and unplug power, plug back after 1min or so, then it start up alright...

And fr my observation, this problem always happen when i come back fr work and start up for 1st time of the day...it's ok if i shut it down and power up right away.

Any idea of what the problem might be and how to solve it? Thanks!

I assemble this pc half a month ago, i7 6700k, gigabyte z170 gaming 7, RM750x PSU, Crucial M300 as system drive and asus gtx 1080A8G,

Look like capacitor slow charging, unable to reach required voltage to power rig.

Try another PSU if you have spare.

Oh. I remember having this problem on my motherboard last time when I first got it. Definitely not a PSU problem.

Firstly, try to take out and reconnect the Power Cables. If yours is fully modular power supply, you may have accidentally connected the PCI-E power cable or slot on the power supply and connected it into the CPU power slot on the motherboard. So please check online on which cable goes where and not use the wrong cables. PCI-E cables got maybe 1 or 2 pins empty. For the CPU cable, there will be all pins in the holes of the cable ends.
I upgraded my cables to sleeved cables and accidentally made a mistake of not even connecting the power cable to the CPU slot on the top left of my Asus motherboard. The system turns on but diagnosis light is not shining on the motherboard because the CPU is not receiving any power.
So you can try changing the power cable for the CPU as well if you suspect it to be faulty. There should be another one that comes with the PSU.

Secondly, this one, I experienced a similar problem in the first few months after buying whereby the motherboard sometimes doesn't post anything after I changed some UEFI settings like turning on TPU to boost my CPU performance. What you can do is reset CMOS and then update your motherboard firmware. And then, do not have any motherboard software on your Windows. It can sometimes be wonky and buggy and slow down performance. So if I ever want to do any mobo edits, I'll go straight to UEFI. Ever since I did all this, no more issue of sometimes when I power on, the PC doesn't post when all fans and lights are on. I suspect it could be the Z170 motherboards were too new before and thus have a lot of bugs that needed to be fixed with firmware. For months now, I don't have any issue with PC not posting when turning on.

In my opinion, it is very difficult to determine the issue if it is somewhat intermittent.

I think the best way to troubleshoot is to start with one stable component.
Eg. In your case, i will start with a power supply, that i am confident of being in decent working condition, to test.

If all works fine after troubleshooting for few hours, i will change back to the old power supply n test.

Else if any problem arise, i will still continue to use the 'new' power supply, but i change the next suspected part, till the problem seems to disappear.

Then slowly work backwards, and swap back the original components that didnt solve the problem when i changed them. If it gives any problem, i will change it again to a component in working condition. Then continue...

Unfortunately it means availability of spare components and extended time to test, and effort. Cannot rush, cannot kanchiong.

Last time i test customer's computer for 2-3 days, sometimes one week if the customer not in rush.

Another thing i use to do is to take the motherboard out to clean off the dust, especially on the rear side that touches the casing. Clean all components reasonably.

Thanks for the advice. I reconnected the CPU cables and found all 8 pins are there, not empty. so shouldnt be the first problem you mentioned.

I will see if this problem still persist after i come back tmr. If not, I guess i should first try to go through the settings in UEFI (because I did made some changes to FAN speed curve in mobo software), then try reset CMOS if it still doesnt work?

I have no idea of what is resetting CMOS though...need to google tutorial to reset CMOS

thanks for the advice. sadly i do not have any spare component to test and a bit troublesome to borrow fr friends.

Although i only assemble this PC a few weeks ago but i did take out mobo and clean dust just now, and reconnect the cables. see if this works out

Another thing i find out is if i unplug the power supply after I shut down, i will not have this start-up problem.....

the spec is on 2nd floor. 6700k, gigabyte gaming 7, RM750x, crucial mx300, asus 1080a8g

Sorry to hijack, anyone has any idea why my pc takes awhile to post? my rig is as seen on the right, using x99a sli plus. when i press the power button, it takes at around 7-10 seconds before it shows the MSI startup screen. While the waiting is not a problem with me, im just worried that it might be a faulty board or something.

Sounds like leaky cap. Ur PSU how old?

7-10 sec does seems like a issues though. cos even my old c2d also dun take that long to post.

maybe u can try swapping and plug out some rams and maybe change your mobo bat and see?
