PC sudden power down, cannot switch on

Sudden power down while i was using web browser to read news article. Hdd led light up solid, usually is blinking.

Switch off power plug wait for few mintues. Nothing happened when on power on. Fan do not spin, no beep, hdd led remain lit solid.

About 3 years old.

Cooler master v 600w psu. Intel 6700

OS on ssd with super old hdd.

Could the hdd cause this? few years ago windows system report keep reporting hdd errors, recently it was making loud spinning sound.

The fan do try to spin for split second when power on, then immediately stop. Disconnected the hdd power cable still the same.

Then is a click sound from the psu when power up.

sniff the power supply and see whether any burnt smell. If no then unplug everything and plug back 1 by 1 to test.

Removed everything from motherboard left cpu. Tested with another backup psu of another brand. Bootup normally with error beeps.<br />

Thought of using this psu until get the faulty psu replaced. Reconnected everything. The backup psu is also modular, with exact same modular connector for the sata and 4 pins power cables. It was very late at that time and tired so just plugged coolermaster sata and 4 pins power cables into the psu.<br />

Then nightmare started. Did a last power on check before close case. Fans spin and stop a few times, then a small plume of thick white smoke started rising from hdd area and somewhere inside the case. Immediately switched off power.<br />

Checked the backup psu sata power cable then realised they are not wired the same way. Connected the backup psu sata power cable to ssd without connecting hdd and able to boot up normally. The psu voltage are normal in bios. However cannot boot when the hdd power is connected.<br />

Should i continue to use my pc as usual until the coolermaster psu get replaced? Was able to use web browser and load game for few minutes without any smoke.

Lol smoke coming out already, don't ignore the symptoms
A new 80 Plus Bronze Seasonic PSU going for $90 only (or top up for gold one for another $50), if you fry even more stuff besides the HDD, data recovery and new stuff to replace is not worthwhile.

After the white smoke, does the HDD still work? I assume you fried something for that to happen!

I was facing the backup psu exhuast while switch on power. There was no smoke coming out of the psu. I think smoke was from the hdd and a system fan connected directly to psu as motherboard only has 2 fan headers.

I think ssd has a new program error/bad sector. Need to check crystaldiskinfo log to confirm.

Lucky the hdd was showing sign of failing years ago. Backup everything to external hdd. Final died due to user fault after 14 years. Make in singapore seagate 7200.10

looks like you lost some magic smoke for the computer

in all seriousness, smoke within a computer is a bad sign, you probably should not do anything further in case the damage gets worse

After the white smoke, does the HDD still work? I assume you fried something for that to happen!

The smoke was coming out from the hdd power connector. Briefly inspected the hdd pcb yesterday did not saw burnt mark or burnt smell.

But it was causing pc to not boot after the smoke.
