Permanently Erase HDD

I know there are a lot of free software online that are able to permanently erase HDD.
But I'm wondering, if I were to copy a lots of large video files onto the HDD until it's full, will it also do the same job?

Filling will large video files and permanently erase are totally two different things. Best is to write in a fixed pattern, be it zeros or one to be more safer..

Doesn't work that way dude.
Large files might be overwritten by your large video files, but small files under 10MB or less high chance will still be there.
Just go perform a low level format and let it run overnight.

The feature is no longer applicable today tho.

Funny, my perfectly spinning but undetectable HDD was quoted $2000. How much does it take to recover a hammered HDD?

No idea but it is still possible to recover some data from smashed hard drive.
The recovered data useful or not is another question.
With specialized equipment you can look at each individual block on the platter which can allow experts to recover enough 0s and 1s to read.

I think one can ownself make file then merge two files together to create a larger file. Just repeat a few times it will grow big enough.
