I am a local uni IT grad with 5 years of application software development experience in Java/Microsoft.NET. Looking to find out more about the pros and cons of IT/cyber security jobs and roles from practising security professionals before considering any serious attempt at switching.
I am used to a structured environment where there is a proper schedule, plans and processes; people are not activated at last minute to firefight anywhere without preparation. I am also not good at multitasking or thinking on my feet in volatile high stress situation. In fact, my health has not been great in recent years, and I get a migraine/headache when under stress.
However, I do not mind learning new things and I like to have the time and space to research on a problem, issue or technology before coming back with well thought out solution or plan. By and large, I think software development has allowed me to do this. But I have no aspiration for project management role in software projects.
I wonder if there are any specific security roles or specializations in Singapore that may be suitable for my personality and working style. What kind of IT/cyber security roles do people with software development background commonly end up in? Obviously, incident responder and SOC analyst sounds quite the opposite as they are required to respond immediately. What about forensic investigator, pen tester, security auditor and other roles?
Feel free to share the pros and cons of security roles and any career recommendations with me. Or you may advise me to stick to software developer job as there is no suitable security role that sounds suitable.
