Hi I recently got PES-F'ed for some mental issues. Are the rumors about not being able to buy house, hard to find job etc true? Thanks. I have been worried about this for the past few weeks and it's worsening my health. Thanks

Remember, whatever you do in army for 2 years, outside boss won't see. So if you go do 10x also only army record will show but CV record won't say anything

If you got money, I don't see why you can't buy the house.

If you are PES F because you genuinely have mental issues, then being able to find a job or not is just a function of that.

If you are PES F because you CK about mental issues, then you just have to suffer any consequences when it comes to finding a job lor.

I don't see why you should be worried about anything if your mental issues is genuine, cause that's not something you can control. Is not like you should "un-PES F" yourself just cause of all those concerns that you have.

If you are being asked,

What is your PES?

If you are PES F, what is the reason for that?

Do you have any mental conditions?

Will you declare whatever you have been asked, or will you hide it?

Outside boss will see if you tell them. If you put it on your CV cause you did something special in army, they will see it. so what you said is not really that true?

Every job application form i have completed has asked for my NS info including unit, PES, rank, etc. For what also i dunno.

If u put pes F of course some employers may wonder why pes f. And if they find out mental issue they may think twice. May that is.

To each his own lah but for me i will ask mindef if can be pes e. I rather be pes e clerk for 2 years than be pes f.

I'm not implying that he chao keng to get PES F. What I'm saying is, based on personal experience most jobs in S'pore for whatever reason when you fill up the application form they will ask about NS.

Some just ask whether still NSman or MR. Some even asked for unit, vocation, rank & PES status. The issue with being PES F is that employers will know for sure that there is something seriously wrong with you, medically, mentally or otherwise.

Its not like in the past where a simple flat foot can get you PES E or even PES F. Now SAF is very strict and its hard to get PES C let alone F. So obviously something very wrong if the person is PES F.

Now put yourself in the shoes of the HR person. Even if the candidate is great in all other areas. Lots of relevant experience, good attitude, etc. But if he is PES F, as a HR person I will think twice.

Call it discrimination if you like, but the fact is all sorts of discrimination exists. As a HR person I will definitely ask why PES F. Got letter from SAF? Does letter say the reason?

If due to medical/health problem, I will worry because will he have to see doctor regularly? If so then it means work is disrupted. Even if never get MC, but time spent to see doctor is still disruption. Also, will he incur a lot in terms of medical expense? If my company got some medical insurance ok lah, all covered by insurance. If not every time he go and see doctor and come back to claim petty cash, siong for my company sia!

And how will his medical/health problem affect his work? Is he more prone to injury for e.g. Are there certain things he can't do which others can do?

For mental, the company will surely also wonder a lot of things. What mental problem? Will he be able to cope with stress? Will the mental problem affect his quality of work?

I am pretty sure these are reasons why companies always ask for PES status, if not then for what?

This is very true. The implications of PES F are not limited just for jobs -- I have seen university applications, overseas student visas and insurance applications rejected because of PES F. I have also seen several PES F personnel come back years later begging to revoke the grading.

Not saying TS is trying to keng either, but a lot of people don't stop to consider the implications of PES F. If a person is granted PES F, the medical corps are essentially saying that he is so medically unwell that even working an admin role in SAF/SPF/SCDF is a threat to himself and/or his colleagues and/or national security.

Exact PES F conditions are classified, but diagnoses on par would include -- cancer, organ failure, genetic syndromes such as Downs syndrome, severe schizophrenia, severe mental retardation, HIV, terminal illnesses etc. Don't forget that with such diagnoses, it is highly likely that the person would have spent some degree of time in public healthcare institutions, so trying to hide the condition is practically courting certain doom.

If there is one grade not worth kenging for, it is PES F.

Edit: for the actual buying of the house probably shouldn't be that big an issue, but housing insurance premiums may possibly be higher depending on the diagnosis.

Anything is possible. But we aren’t them, so we can’t tell you.

But if employer asks the pes F guy to do G50, would it reveal information or doesn't get clear?
