Hi guys ,

Following the MRI scan , the results were stated as follows :

According to the MRI scan's summary , i was diagnosis ed with Bulging disk and Schmorl node at the L4-5 section .

Note : Bulging disk is the first stage of the DE-GENERATIVE Disk , depending the intensity of physical activities and the BMT training .

So , i would like to ask the following questions :

1) If i managed to get the specialist's memo , does it mean that i have higher percentage of downgrading my PES status .

If so , what are the likely status will i be granted ?

2) Does my medical condition seemed serious enough to get a downgrading of PES status , assuming that i do the advanced diagnosis test and get the memo .

3) Why did the Medical Board not grant any excuses for my hearing problem ( i was diagnosis ed with tinnitus )

to make it simply after your wall of words :)

It all depends on the attending MO, a specialist's memo is a recommendation he/she thinks you should be getting. And finally, what the 'book' state about your condition and what PES you should be given or a chance for medical board.

Hey , guys

But , there were some things i wished to point out in this post . First , Does the bulging of the disk widespread among the recruits or youngsters . Second , Wouldnt the bulging disk worsen into herniated disc or even degenerative disc disease . Third , the specialist told me there were abnormalities in my lumbar spin and yet the MO dismissed it .

Hey , guys

I copied this chunk of informations from my blog and didnt bother to edit it since i was short of time . Anyway , i fully appreciated the replies and comments by the fellow hardwarezone members .

Actually , i also copied this information to the SG forum and received concrete response . For example , i would be downgraded to a mild PES C range if i have a specialist's memo , as stated by Eac .

Are you going to take that guy's word for it? What if you didn't get downgraded? Are you going to hold him responsible? Never be too sure about answers given online because they are not binding.

Hi guys ,

I have been experiencing intensive back pain following the rigorous physical training since i enlisted on the 6 March 2010 . With the pain became unbearable , i decided to ask my parents to book an medical appointment for my back pain at any of the hospital regardless of private or public ASAP . Fortunately , my parents managed to book an medical appointment at the Raffles Hospital on the 16 March 2010 . The doctor handling my case was Dr David Wong Him Choon , a regionally well known spine consultation . In addition , he has successfully conducted the disc replacement surgery with the success rate of 100 %

The specialist conducted a detailed physical examinations and the medical history which i have been experiencing since the early childhood . Then , he asked me to do the MRI scan , which it would be held at Thursday . in order to determine the source and cause of the back pain . In the meantime , i was given the 3 days of medical certificate to cover the time between current and MRI scan .

To my disappointment , the specialist refused to write the memo , which states my medical condition , as the results wasnt conclusive . Therefore , he asked me to conduct a advanced diagnosis test called the Provocative Discogram .Then , i argued that i wouldnt be covered with any status for the time being if i choose not to do the diagnosis test . He said : '' i couldnt write the memo as long as the results wasnt conclusive arguing that it would significantly influence the MO decision . I discussed the matter with my parents seriously and concluded that theh cost of the diagnosis test ( cost around $4000 after the deduction from Medishield .) was relatively , i decided to go to the AMK's polyclinic to ask for a referral letter which they willing to grant it to me after much persuasion . I was referred to the TTSH's Orthpaedic clinic and the medical appointment would be at the 6 /18 . So , my parents asked me to go to the medical centre to demand the status with the necessary documents in order to cover the period between the medical appointment at the TTSH and current .

Next , i went to the Pualu Tekong medical centre for a medical review on my hearing and spinal problem . In the first consultation , i shown the Medical Officer ( commonly known as MO in solders' slang ) the necessary documents , including the MRI scan's summary and the words from the specialist .In the first words blurted out by the MO , he said : '' Shouldnt u be OOT by now since u have so many medical condition '' . After looking at the documents by the MO , he asked me when would be yr next appointment with the Alexandria Hospital . In response , i told him that i have yet received the medical appointment letter from the medical centre . In the end , he gave me excuses for RMJ ( Running , Marching and Jumping ) and Loud Noise for two weeks . However , concurrently , he taken off my excuses for heavy load arguing that the above excuses would be sufficiently covered the medical condition for the time being .

So , i messaged the news to my parents immediately( since it would seriously undermined the health ) and they told me to ask for advices from the PC regarding my medical condition and status . Reluctantly , i approached the PC for further advices regarding my medical conditions as according to the wishes of my parents . As usual , i shown the necessary documents and told him my situation to my PC . Then , my PC suggested that i should go to the medical centre to demand the necessary status to cover for the period , otherwise , u would have to participate the training which in turn may or may not worsen the condition .

Next day , i went to the medical centre for the medical review for my spinal problem with the hope of demanding the needed status. In the second consultation with the MO , i shown the necessary documents to him . After looking at the documents , he said '' the medical conditions seemed to be normal , as stated in the MRI scan's summary . Regarding the bulging , he argued that many people have bulging disk and suffering the varied effects . '' In response , i told him that there were abnormalities in my L4-5 section of the spine , according to the words of my specialist ,and awaited for the further diagnosis test to confirm the source and cause of the back pain . However , the MO shown no sympathy towards my medical conditions since my medical condition seemed relatively normal and mild . Then , he asked whether i have been experiencing pain on my back in which i answered YES In the end , he didnt give me the demanded status and merely referred me to the Pulau Tekong Physiotherapy Centre for the physiotherapy session in the hope relieving the pain .

So , i would like to ask the following questions :

1) If i managed to get the specialist's memo , does it mean that i have higher percentage of downgrading my PES status .

If so , what are the likely status will i be granted ?

2) Does my medical condition seemed serious enough to get a downgrading of PES status , assuming that i do the advanced diagnosis test and get the memo .

lazy to read ur wall of text....but
if u got ur specialist letter, most likely..the MO will refer u to medical board den the specialist(inside the medical board will review ur case)
remain or downgrade depend on ur luck

if downgrade ...most likely will b PES C only unless u realli lucky..drop to E

all medical condition(whether fit or unfit for change of PES) depend on ur leading doctor letter....only he haf the authority to influence the medical board ppl

if MO dismissed it..tat means it not serious (at least to the MO he himself)
but watever is it...i tink u can still request to b refer to higher auorithy ...

I had an uneventful experience for my hearing problem ( i was diagnosis-ed with tinnitus ) following the review of the medical case by the MMI before the enlistment.

But , when i received the enlistment letter , i was surprised and angered by the content . In the enlistment letter , i was given a PES B status without any excuses such as range , grenade etc by the CMPB even though i was diagnosis-ed with the tinnitus .After the enlistment ,with the constant exposure to the loud noise , i felt my hearing ability seemed to worsen and asked to be referred to the NUH's ENT department .

Qns : Do they have to wait till the eardrum to rupture then they will take actions ?

As usual , i was asked to do the audio test and i failed the test BADLY due to the hesitation time lag to press the button . In the end , i was accused of malingering which i FIRMLY denied in strongest term . Also , the specialist ( Himself is a MO ) said the hearing problem was relatively minor as there were no apparent ruptured eardrum .

Qns : Do they have to wait till the eardrum to rupture then they will take actions ?
They feel that you are not serious enough? Or the condition all along warrants only a PES B?

Go see private specialist lor.

Even if the conditions warrant only a PES B status , at the minimum , they should excused me of range and grenade .

I'm going to ask for a referral letter to the government hospital in the next polyclinic visit .

U see , there were constant buzzing and ringing sounds in my ears with the severity fluctuates periodically . I had to distinguished the sounds ( sounds generated artificially ) first then pressed the button . But , the permitted time was relatively short like 5 seconds , including the pressing and hearing .As such , i cant completed the audio test to my satisfaction .

Even if the conditions warrant only a PES B status , at the minimum , they should excused me of range and grenade .
NUH is a govt hosp wat.

Convince me no use. Convincing them is what is impt

If u can't fire a gun then how u even be combat fit. grenade possible. but not range unless u ain't combat fit

It is uphill task to convince a specialist when he is also a MO . Even if i have a difficulty to hear , he will merely dismiss it as superficial or minor .

Welcome to NS. The world where no officers are fit to wear their ranks. MO are in the army with the mentality every soldier who sees them is malingering, so unless there are some cold hard facts like malignant cancerous cells on the MRI, which they cannot deny, it's not gonna be enough to convince them to downgrade or provide excuses.

Second, MO's are like lotteries. If you get a good one, you probably get what you want, otherwise you'll just have to suffer till something happens then you can point the finger at the MO.

Third, parents should be the one calling up the medical center and your OC to tell them about your medical condition, not you. Get them to dial the hotline and demand an answer in three days. Things move a lot faster when parents are involved.

whether you can downgrade is heng suay one.. But before u downgrade need to go through medical board... If don't have confirm no downgrade.. I was injured during my first few mths of NS but was only downgraded few mths before I ord.. You need to complain your discomfort to the MO.. For back injury.. Pain to them is not so serious.. Is only when it seems to affect your nerve then they will gan jiong and downgrade u..

Recently , i started to feel numbness and tingling on both of the legs even though lasted only a few hours . Also , the pain radiated downwards to my legs and sometimes my arms , causing great difficulty in marching . So , i decided to go to the medical centre to voice out the concerns . The MO merely said that it was pretty normal and would recede afterwards .

What should i do now ? Voice the concerns to the specialist and get a strong-worded memo in the upcoming memo or sit-and-wait approach .

i got bulging disc from ns also... i think is L1 to L5... can't remember the numbers exactly... basically is lower back...

anyway soon after entering bmt i got back pain, go see mo he say just a back strain. when to see him a couple of times after that with the same issue cos the pain never stop at all but always say just back strain so i gave up seeing him in the end.

after bmt i went sispec, not the new shorten sispec but the old 3 months sispec, with the back pain. go see the mo there but he say the same thing. told him back pain for 3 months non stop liao so how can be "a mere back strain". he gave me the benefit of doubt and referred me to jmc ortho.

i guess sispec trainee say things got more weight than bmt recruit... future commander vs cao recruit.

saw the ortho specialist... say some fancy stuff about back muscle which i don't understand and referred me for physio. told the jmc physio what the jmc ortho said about the back muscle and she said it basically means it is a slightly more severe form of back strain.

one year later, can't take it anymore liao... has been going for physio and ortho review regularly but still pain all the time. complain to ortho so he send me for mri scan. mri scan result shows i got bulging disc so ortho wrote a memo to give camp mo.

gave camp mo the memo, thinking can down pes or something, but in the end only got 6 months rmj and h/l. i question him how come only 6 months excuse and not perm excuse or perm down pes. he told me my condition not severe enough so cannot down pes. then i ask him like that how, if wait until severe enough by then too late liao... perm damage to my spinal cord which will result in some form of perm disability.

he understands my concern but there is nothing he can do so he told me bluntly... saf medical doctrine and sop say bulging disc without nerve impinchment cannot down pes.

now i ord liao... still got bulging disc... still pes b... still combat fit... is still expected to do everything a healthy pes b 3sg(ns) is supposed to do.

haiz... totally disappointed in saf... they don't believe in preventing an injury from getting worse. they only care if right now is it serious or not, not how serious it can become.
