Figured it would be great to learn together with more people.

Many thanks for starting this thread Rica88 as we can
see the joy of photography has caught on with millions
of people who are taking causal photographs daily
especially with their mobile devices and their Dslrs.

It would help to create more interest if a new and exciting
name is given to this group other than "a photography club"
for there are already thousands of such groups following
the idea of the "club" kind of formality.

Looking forward to further ideas for a new name other
than "photography club". The name should give some ideas
of its mission and goals spelling out its activities for the
benefits of mankind today and in the future

Not only you started with a kit lens, one has to learn to walk properly
before one can start to run.

There are people who used the kit lens for years and never even have
an extra lens but still after some learning and making efforts
manage to take better and better pictures.

Lessons to learn in photography:
Prepare well mentally and taking pride
in every photographs that you take.

Here is some encouragement for budding photographers.
I remember the former National Arts Council chairman,
Prof. Tommy Koh made the point that photographs should
be as valuable as paintings, ceramics and sculptures
although they lag behind all three as a collectible art form.

He said:
"Photographs are also more affordable as art forms.
There is a need to raise public appreciation of photography.
At present very few Singaporeans collect art photographs.
I want to change that."

and be able to squeeze and activate the shutter release
without shaking the camera while it is attached with the
standard/kit lens?

This is the first essential skill to acquire because you will
avoid unsharp or blurred pictures when hand holding
your camera.

no worries, everyone started from the kit lens.
I started digging into books.

Learning some skills is essential for all beginners.

The first lesson I learned is:

Are you able to hold your DSLR camera in a steady manner
and be able to squeeze and activate the shutter release
without shaking the camera while it is attached with the
standard/kit lens?

This is the first essential skill to acquire because you will
avoid unsharp or blurred pictures when hand holding
your camera.

As most camera doesn't have in body stabilization so
the stabilization falls on the lens itself if the lens have IS.
Most DSLR whether entry/mid/high end models all have battery grip
which you can add on if you feel your grip is not very steady
especially with a large hand.

The grip can be brought from camera shops or online.
The good thing about the grip is you can put two batteries inside.
Other than grip, you can consider a mini tripod

Use it as a grip which sometimes prove useful than bringing a regular tripod.
Handling is one thing, technical aspect when shooting is also important.

That is a must if you are positive about the seriousness
in putting more effort in learning photography.

Go out with the battery grip every time you shoot and soon
you will love its stability in providing you with sharper pictures.

Next is to hunt for the tripod that you have to use for long
exposures.
