Quick update: I managed to turn an old Core2Duo my friend passed me into an ESXi host. It is a bit of a struggle since this was supposed to be my production machine (e.g. main server and NAS kinda thing) and it has 4GB DDR2 RAM.

I have also checked SLS already; let's just say that I prefer to either get from the Marketplaces here or even just outright build a new one :X

Thanks man, X79 or X99 is quite overkill though. A Skylake build sounds fine but then again, if building a rig for training only sounds funny (unless the idea is to build something that I can use? Which means a gaming-level rig...?)

Worse come to worse I make do for now and go do something else (I have a few other plans, and school lol) until I got money or something.

ownself train ownself.... nth funny about it.Gaming and VM dont link. Unless u wanna running in a VM workstation then run ESXi in the workstation, u will just have to make do.

4gb ram definitely not enuf. Minimum 8gb DDR2. Good Luck in your quest!

Think it's going to be expensive to get 8gb DDR2.... older DDR2 are in smaller size like 1GB or 2GB, and you need 4X ram slots to make up 8G and pray no compatibility issues...

Maybe should have just get the $175 G3258 with AsRock motherboard... and can get 8G or 16G DDR3 easily... since it's a training rig.

2GB DDR2 are about $10 a stick second-hand. I see this for sale on VR-Zone now and then.

I meant that using a production machine for training is kinda... wrong (since you need the production machine for other purposes too; you can't be always tearing it down).

In fact, I started on this quest for old machines as my initial plan was to just go buy a Skylake rig outright and do ESXi training and basic NAS/webhosting tasks with it, which many of my friends working in IT pointed out that it is not advisable.

And yes, I am starting to see why 8GB is the recommended amount lol.

SLS now selling 4GB DDR2 sticks for 149 bucks

And I have no more RAM slots on that Core2Duo too :(

Lol, I am not the only person here that wishes to no need to pay if possible :s13:

But really, I am already paying (I have actually purchased an Intel NIC and installed it onto the Core2Duo; now also seeing if need to swap PSU and casing), but I want to make sure that whatever decision(s) I make are worth it and also that I have tried every possible option known to achieve it. :)

Thanks, I did see those deals too, just that I have no more RAM slots and also a bit uncomfortable in spending too much on an obsolete tech maybe?
