Words of advice for those building a new rig. Always plan well before making the parts purchase or you will end up with a lot of redundant parts BNIB which cost MONEY. Those extra dollars can most probably buy you an extra gpu to do SLI even.

He didn't mean buy second-hand.
What he meant is to plan well, and buy what you really require.

I still get requests from relatives to help rip numerous DVD movies every now and then. So my DVD drive still got some use. And why not? I also use "Ultimate" :s13:

+1.

For example, I'm considering buying a new Haswell rig. I was all ready to plunk down money for Corsairs 2400MHz RAM, then I realised... I'm not planning to overclock and Intel only supports 1600MHz RAM, so why spend the extra cash?:s22:

LOL, TS really sounds like talking about himself... getting a 1500W psu for a rig with only a single graphic card, no qual SLI or dual sli whatever... it's totally overkill... :s22:

I agree with TS. Not worth wasting money on unplanned items. For me, i bought the HP Blu Ray Writer thinking that splurging $155 on this optical drive would 'futureproof' my rig. Now when i look back at those times, i really sigh in regret. I dun even have a single Blu Ray disc to begin with, y i even buy a Blu Ray writer for? Most of the stuff I do use USB which is cheaper and more convenient than discs, and some of the older games i play i still need the original CD to play it, which a $25 LG DVD writer could do the job of this $155 white elephant.

So bottom line, if u dun wan to waste money buying unncessary parts on a rig that would devalue fast, plan before you splurge.

480p DVD is good enough for them since they're used to 240p DVDs from bolehland over the years :s13:

I think sometimes when u are deep into a certain zone, for e.g. mixing around in forums with very up to date technology like bluray, you tend to lose track or think other or older technology are redundant...
a lot of people outside this zone dun even know what Bluray is in detail... and from an uncle like me, my dvd-rw is still very useful because there are tons of media in the library are in DVD format (u get what i mean :D )..

On the other hand, some things are just overkill for their purpose but wont go into it, since if people can afford it and feel 'song'... i have no business to comment too much.

well said. i was in same shoe as you a while back... slowly and.progressively , i ripped my dvd into iso stored in nas and threw away the disc, later i replaced the iso as 720p and 1080p looks nicer, now progessively and Slowly wiping out the dvd iso.

it's call evolution... some people move faster, some move slower.

i even have friends who still go JB... go figure...

also sometimes the part you want is out of stock, need to have alternative decided before hand otherwise salesman will try to sell you a more expensive part which is over your requirements or a lousy one which they can't sell.
