Please advice on my less than average A level grades :(

Please help!

I just got my results on the 2nd of March and I am thinking of applying into social science related courses be it in NUS/NTU/SMU, as long as they are local unis ( I don't have the money to study in a private uni or go overseas unfortunately. ) My results are BCD/A. Gp -B and PW- B respectively. I am from the science stream as well so I guess its good in a sense that I can explore other options? Is there ANY chance of me getting in at all? And what other courses would you like to advice me on ( any local unis will do)

I will assume you are interested in social sciences.
You can apply for NUS, NTU, SMU and SIT, all these uni have social science courses.
You may also consider UniSIM Part-time social science degrees, but they generally non-honours.

Refer to NUS, NTU and SMU IGP, see if your grades fit the 10th percentile,
If yes, then you have a good chance.
No? Then be prepared to appeal.

Can ma BCD/A is broadly equivalent to BCC/C since 2 H1 subjects is equal to 1 H2 subject.

BCC/C plus a B for both GP and PW is an alright score, not too fantastic and not too lousy as well.

Compute your rank points and compare it with the NTU engineering courses, you meet(in fact, you exceed) the cut-off point for it mah.

There are still other courses(non-engineering) where you meet/exceed the cut-off grades.

I will break down the calculation for you:

Grade- -H2 Equivalent- -H1 Equivalent
A- -20- -10
B- -17.5- -8.75
C- -15- -7.5
D- -12.5- -6.25
E- -10- -5
S- -5- -2.5
U- -0- -0



Ranking Points/UAS witout MTL: 72.5
Ranking Points/UAS with MTL: 66.25
Ranking Points/UAS for comparison ; 72.5 (Your UAS score)

IGP Ranking Points: 72.5 (SMU's social science 10th percentile)
Difference: 0

IGP Ranking Points: 72.5 (NTU's sociology 10th percentile)
Difference: 0

IGP Ranking Points: 76.25 (NUS's social sciences 10th percentile)
Difference: -3.75


Well, the good news is youu just hit both 10th percentiles for both SMU's and NTU's social science/sociology course but fall behind only for NUS.

If I were you, I'd still apply for all 3. You will have a higher chance of getting into SMU/NTU.

One pro tip: SMU is making some major expansion plans and they are moving more towards into becoming a University rooted in the social sciences. But, you may also wish to consider doing more research for the other universities as well.


NUS's social sciences cut off rose drastically from Year 2013-2014. NTU's stayed roughly around the same.

SMU don't really look at results that much. You just need to pass their group interview. Good luck!

You should still have a good chance for some NTU engineering courses if thats where your interest lies.

And are there some engineering courses e.g. computer science or environmental engineering that you would like to recommend me which are not extremely physics based? I got my D from physics T_T

Comp engine and com sci would have less physics. Environmental and civil has less math but the physics factor is still there. Most people worry more about uni level math than physics in engineering. The physics will be re-taught and each module only tests what is taught in that module anyway. Its usually the math that kills people.
