Please help (lao uncle) HP ProBook 4331s

Please help, HWZ-clinic. I am lao uncle, and totally idiot for laptop.
I am using HP ProBook 4331s (purchased from NUS computer fair 2011).

I am stupid, i did not burnt the recovery disc..... i should have, but all my previous experience, i never need them, so i did not bother for the first time, and i am caught with my pants down.

I was using the computer 3 days ago, then suddenly hang, which dont even respond to Ctrl-Alt-Delete, so i switch off the power and also remove the battery.... yes, i hard exit the computer, and then i cannot boot my laptop ever since.

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the probloem,
insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

I dont have the disc. I bring the computer back to HP service centre. They tested, the Hard-disc is OK, the hardware (laptop) is ok. It is a software problem.

HP wanted to charge SGD75, i bring back to NUS, cheaper (SGD40) but they can only reformat back to factory condition but i have un-duplicated important files in the harddisk.


Wonder anyone have the recovery disc for HP ProBook4331s.

Why dont u download and burnt a Ubuntu Live CD?
Download Ubuntu Desktop | Ubuntu

The boot from the live CD, go on demo mode and see if u can have access to all the important files? Copy them out first before u try anything?

Hello uncle, i may not be able to help you, but please don't call yourself stupid just because you forgot to make a recovery disc!

Since the pc still booting and hard disk may be good. Try to recover the pc via recovery partition?

Many clever people also use PC without burning recovery cd (or now a day USB recovery drive) anyway. Something for everyone to learn.

My computer cannot boot..... i bring back to HP service center, they tested the computer and the hard-disk, both are OK, it is not bootable beause the software had corrupted.
Now i manage to get the Window 7 CD, but i still cannot boot, dont know how now>>

Have you tried to select boot from CD drive?

HP recovery partition is the worst i have seen so far.

Why not you take out the HDD, use it as a portable HDD and try to access it in another computer via USB. But if you set a windows password then it's more troublesome to recover in certain directory as it's in password protected directory but not impossible.

So long as the HDD is not faulty. it's possible to recover every files in it.

I went to the site..... and burnt the ubuntu CD.... but did not try because my harddisk is very huge, cannot find another such huge drive to copy the entire HDD out.

I am considering to take out the entire HDD (from the laptop) buy a casing (whatever that is, but seems that HP service centre suggest) cost about SGD36, and use it forever as a external HDD. At the same time, get a new internal HDD to replace in the laptop, then set up altoghether.

But someone suggest that this may not be good *beside costly, because many of the drivers may be obsolete, because i got the HDD as early as 2011.

Does using the Window 7 disc help??

any enclosure will do as long the interface is the right 1.

i reckoned your hdd is on SATA so simply go Sim Lim Square and buy from between level 4-5 for 1 enclosure. (Please learn to check it yourself)

drivers for such enclosures are usually plug and play on win7

you just need to copy the files you need, don't have to be the entire hard drive. usually only the Document and Pictures. Once you copy out the files you want, you can put back the HDD, format it and use it again.

Lao unkle also like to be self-sufficient. One day when you are 50 years old, you will understand. When I was young, I used to laugh at my parent who cannot use video recorder, now I fully understand. I am saying these, because some years later you will understand.

Sorry, I am too sensitive. In my working place, too frequently people laugh at us that we cannot cope with tech advancement. Anyway I am not angry, everyone will grow old and face same situation too.

Windows CD

Maybe can try borrowing windows disk, run command prompt, and repair it using chkdsk from the prompt?

Just soemthing for thoughts.
