Experts, need your help!

I have already booked my air ticket in Oct for 10 days. Arriving and departing Haneda airport. Originally only plan to stay in Tokyo as never been to Japan before thus worry not sure how to move around. However, now contemplating if i should go Kyoto or Osaka as well.. How does the JR railway pass work? Any other pass needed to move around in Tokyo?

I hvn't book my accomodation yet! Please help!

Thank you in advance..

Rgds,
Annie

Thanks for the link!
I actually don't mind staying in Tokyo also (seems like Tokyo has lotsa place to visit).. except not sure will it be a pity to not visit else where

kyoto, osaka and other places in kansai region have enuf attractions to warrant a separate trip on its own for 1-2 weeks. kansai is quite far from tokyo, so it is not very cost effective to travel there since u only have 10 days.

for 10 days, u can stick to tokyo and make some side trips to nearby places. for example, u can travel to hakone and lake kawaguchi for a view of mount fuji, and stay overnight in an onsen ryokan. there are also places suitable for day trips, such as yokohama and kamakura

Or get the Tokyo Wide pass and go up to Kusatsu overnight for a different onsen town experience. Coming back, can stop at Takasaki if you like daruma. Or can consider staying overnight at Nikko as well. The leaves should start to turn colour for some places in Oct.

Use cash or get a Suica or PASMO card when in Tokyo. The card works the same as ez-link card in SG.

Really depends if you would want to visit Kyoto or Osaka. If it's the first time, stay in Tokyo is also good. Way too many places in Tokyo and Greater Tokyo Area to visit.

JR Pass works around throughout japan on JR specific rails.

however for cost benefits it is better to use the 7 day pass to travel out of tokyo because shinkansen/JR train are much more expensive than regular tokyo city trains.

within tokyo you can just buy tickets or even get their subway card (pasmo/suica)

Agree with this. It all come down to whether you are willing to pay 29110 yen or SGD385 (today's google rate) just for 7 days in Osaka/Kyoto and rushing back to Tokyo.

You can go for the pass set that includes a ride out to Asakusa line + a metro pass up to 3 days. The metro pass is limited in the sense that it limits you to Toei and Tokyo metro lines only, so effectively you can't use the Yamanote line or any other JR lines. Have a look at the local subway map to see if it works out for you.

Oh and one thing I forgot to mention, the pass works for up to 72 consecutive hours (depending on the number of days you buy), so make full use of it by packing the heavy travel days together.

At least 2 weeks if going to Tokyo + Kansai region.

Otherwise just focus on Tokyo and nearby(Yamanashi/Nikko/Kanagawa that most people do so.)

No need for JR Pass.
Either train from Haneda to Ikebukuro (monorail then JR Yamanote Line) or limousine bus to Ikebukuro station East Exit and walk or take a cab from Ikebukuro station if you had a lot of luggage (should be around ¥1,000 for 5 min ride).

No worries ;) just need a little help from Mr. Google sometimes. Get a list of the locations that you'll be visiting. Do you require the metro or more commonly use the JR Yamanote line and decide from there.
