PLEASE HELP! PRIVATE UNI OR LOCAL

I'm confused if I should go to a private university or a local university.

Course: Cyber Security

SIM(Wollongong university)
-1 and a half year module exemption, yay save up on school fees and time
-will I get a degree that says graduated from Wollongong university(SG) or just graduated from wollongong university?

-SIT
-1 sem module exemption, meaning I will still go through the 3 year degree program
-local uni. But is it good?

NTU/NUS
-computer science... not what i want
-good uni but will i get a career in info-sec?

overall, should i go for a private uni path since it is shorter and i can get my degree earlier meaning i get to work faster and earn more working experience as compared to a fresh grad from the above local uni. but i know if i graduate from local uni the pay will be higher but me graduating from a private uni meaning i will be able to earn back what i lose out and i get more experience.
plus if im not aiming to work in a gov sector wont private uni be better? so why arent ppl going for private uni instead of local for dip grads????

If u can afford, go private. I feel some local courses unnecessarily too long.

Then upgrade yourself with it certs

Ngee Ann-Adelaide has a bachelor of computer science program, you might wanna check that out too. Doesn't state whether you studied at in adelaide or sg campus cause the lectures are the same. Should be 2 years programme according to their website.

Well actually I just want to go into a security related course so I can move on to a computer forensics job in the future

what do u want to do in computer forensics?
the dirty job in looking at code etc.. having good computer Sci knowledge is important..

many top Uni don't have a dedicated major in cyber security. courses in cyber security are part of computer sci, in encryption front is Math. its the basic building block in this area. if U don't want to be at the cutting edge of the industry then do a basic IT degree and get a cert from International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners or International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists or ICS2.I believe the later is what U seek.

in terms of ROI, better training will open more doors. the job maybe research in nature to make the big $$. but if U don't want to enter this area then why do local?

Don't measure with time, do it with value..

End of the day, regardless of what degree, local uni will do better in the jobs marketplace.

Also, to most companies - whether u have forensics degree or compsci degree, they dont care, they will hire you and train you

Its only keching kurau mickey mouse companies that will look at what your school taught you and hire you based on that because why? No budget for training and development

they will not look at paper but will look at your specific skills. qns asked will be more technical. if U not doing things outside school one may not even pass their interview.

big companies does not mean they will allocate budget to train ppl in this area esp if this dept is small. idea companies would train u but some expect u to learn on your own. of course a company must have the corporate culture to train new employees, some just throw them in the fire and see them swim and that is training.

In honesty I experience the reverse I get the most training in a small company and I learn the most. in the big company with big budget for training, the training I get is like communication, how to do presentation, soft skills nothing technical when my daily job would like me to be more technical.

Wollongong is non-honours in sg. If you are concern about honours classification, choose other programmes.

I suggest that if you can enter a singapore universities' IT security programme, do so.
Singapore universities will be able to provide you with a better holistic education through a wide range of opportunities to train/test your skills and networking opportunities with industry leaders.

This will strengthen your chance to enter top agencies.

Also, big companies do campus recruiting at local unis, never at private unis. Even during bad times, they will still recruit just to maintain relationship.

In sg, ALWAYS go local.
For foreign Unis, take it overseas (as in physically)

Firstly, whatever degree you obtain now, its value will depreciate yearly just like a car. It matters less and less as time goes by. The rate of depreciation when working in SG is in this order:

Foreign degree obtained overseas.
Local Uni degees.
Private uni degree obtained in SG.

Although these certs are never a good measure of your working ability, SG is decades away from moving away from it.

Since you are targeting a rather specialised IT niche, you will need constant upgrading along your career and most likely you will be working here, take local.
