Please recommend a tripod (amateur)

Hi, please recommend a decent tripod and where to get. Not a pro, just using it literally as a stand to take pictures on solo trip. I suppose decent means sturdy and stable. Do not know the price range of tripods but anything above $200 seems expensive. Thanks.

Forgot to mention its for 1 inch sensor compact camera kind of weight. Dont think i will ever have DSLR

Suggest u drop by camera store like TKfoto and Cathay photo to try and feel it.

Tripod best to feel and test it out and see if it suitable for u.

amk hub MS colour has a benro carbon fiber tripod at $169. Bought it for my wife, quite light and yet when keeping it seems very compact. Can try. Extends out to 1.65m

Tripods contrary to belief, goes a longer way than just 'light' and also 'not a pro'.

If you're not hardcore, maybe you can consider using clamp instead of tripod and it's lighter/easier to carry/deploy.


Middle 2 cams are using clamp which eliminates possibility of the view being blocked.

Downside, is you need to find a suitable place to clamp and take shots.

Using: Phottix Clamp + Sirui K20X ballhead for travelling + rails for pano when travelling.

Stating both your budget and camera type/size/weight is good... but you forget to said what is your height...

Example... I'm in the 1.7m++ range.of height... alot of those good, light weight and affordable tripod doesn't reach the height I like... without extending the centre section (which I don't like)... which mean I'll have to bend quite abit inorder to see through a viewfinder...

But if you are an average height person.... one of those many lightweight tripod will do... especially when you are using a mirrorless type camera and not DSLR with heavy lenses...

This will be more than enough... even suitable for DSLR on walkabout lens....

I am also thinking of getting a tripod for timelapse , however hesitant to get a expansive one($>100) since I just started out on a hobby and wont be using it a bunch. which one is better for travel? typical tripod or GorillaPod??

I use a Sirui T-004KX.

Simple, basic and sturdy. Can support my DSLR easily, so not problem for a compact. Have used it for long exposure photography and time-lapses. Can recommend if you are looking for a no-frills yet good quality tripod without breaking the bank. Price is $119 from TK Foto (from their website).
