Personally, I feel that a second smartphone would be better, can make calls and use foreign prepaid sim.

If your mifi costs $100 or less, then it is more feasible. But if it is more than $150 or even $200, I prefer a Xiaomi phone

Yup! ZiMi mifi model MF885 can last over 10hrs nonstop use.
I had owned many different models include Netgear Aircard AC754/790, Alcatel EE60 and Freeworks 4G LTE.. best still MF885 with no overheating issue auto-shutdown. Less than S$100 include shipping from Taobao.

Max speed is 150Mbps. standard 4G LTE.

If need 300Mbps, next choice is Netgear AC790S. Tested last 6 hours nonstop.

If need 600Mbps, Netgear AC810S. Tested this model in Genting/Taiwan. tested about 6hrs.

Both above models speed only if the local telecom support 4GX. Netgear tends to overheat and shutdown. smart trickle charge powerbank required or buy extra battery.

Not all mifi is having auto-APN.
It is NOT necessary for Netgear or Zmi to add/edit APN profile, but any china brand mifi need so.
Netgear/Zmi will auto APN if the SIM card is registered (aka activated).

How to get sim registered: Once reached foreign land, Put the SIM card onto a phone, and get registered in network, then put back to mifi unit to auto detect APN. It is required for many auto-roam data sim, you get from Carousell, Qoo or Lazada.
