I am enrolling into poly this year and I need to buy a laptop. I want a laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution and can run smoothly with less lag.

I will need to run MS Office 2013 , Adobe Creative Cloud , MYOB11 , Visio 2013 , SAP Client. The minimum requirements for the laptop in the course i am in is

There is a laptop exhibition in the poly from 4-10March. These are the laptops that are on sale during the exhibition.

However, I am aware of the IT show that is on 19-22March. So, I am really lost and don't know if i should buy my laptop during the exhibition or wait for the IT show. And if i do buy from the exhibition, which laptop should I buy? I have a budget of about $1,000-$1,500. I hope you guys can give me some suggestions and tips! Thank you!! ^-^

Accounting course?

What about weight? Is that important to you?

The LifeBook AH555 and X550 looks good at S$1,198 and S$1,228 but it's very heavy. So is the Dell Inspiron 7447 at S$1,175.

Hmm, IT show will probably have some good deals, but the prices won't be that far off from usual IMO.

Yes, weight is definitely an important factor as I have approximately 1.5hours of travelling time to the school from home. Also, yes I am in accounting course! :D The exhibition for the laptop is 4-10 this week so.. Should i get it there or wait till IT show? Those laptops you recommended are really nice but indeed are very heavy.. :( What are your thoughts?? Thanks for the helpful reply!!

Usually laptop fair in school have significant discount and vendors give you all you need for school use like laptop lock, carrying case etc.
In IT fair usually no discount and they just give accessories which you most likely get if you buy in school
But one thing to note is the specs might be customize according to school requirement For the same model specs may be different, school laptop each particular spec can be better or lousier or even the same compared to retailer set
Take the lenovo for example the price listed is atleast few hundreds cheaper

somemore, during my time and at my poly, school laptop is configured to access school server to get notes or adhoc license to open up software
If you buy outside, you will have to configure it yourself,im sure it will take atleast few hours

In short, buy in school may be cheaper, configured out of box if here is any requirements by school
No need scared not compatible with course, the director should have listed some laptops recommended for use in your course

Buy outside, you have more choices but important software like microsoft office may not be given

Consider Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch with at least 8GB memory and 256 flash storage. If you need to run Windows applications, you can install a Windows virtual machine via VMware fusion.

So, buy from school is less trouble. Buy outside, wider range of choices but troublesome. I am on a budget so I don't know if buying from the school would be ideal. Will I be able to grab better deals outside? However, I am really bad at comparing notebooks and it's prices so it's a drawback for me.. I don't know what should I do :/. Especially when the Laptop exhibition in school is this week.

I quoted the links from NYP as they are exactly the same models, specs and prices as the ones being sold this week at NP.

yah just saw NP state 4-10march. if buy from school got 3yr warranty. but buy from IT show at most 2 yrs only.

Just buy from the school. 3 yrs warranty plus all software are preloaded. Not sure about others, if you do development work then it's best to stick to Windows platform.

For the usual IT show,i don't think discount is any significant unless clearing stock maybe only slash 100-200 off
Most poly laptop have 3years onsite warranty and lots of freebies those usual ones, a lock and hard disk you hardly get outside
Somemore all these are direct retailers, hardly they will play punk but in case anything happen you can ask the school for help
For IT show they are any shops like simlim, the promoters there are doig part time aiming for commission and might just promise you anything to make you buy

Why not you list out those models that you have shortlisted from the school then we can advise you from there?

I recommend you go for something lightweight. bringing it to school everyday is no joke. Looking at the requirements, most laptops should be able to meet.

weight is of course a consideration. But from those slim and light laptop they are using low power processor with the -U behind the processor. I think X550 with the i7-4710HQ is pretty beastly enough for most of the software u have. Down side to the model is only 240GB SSD storage. which means U need to either install a 2.5inch drive for storage or keep most of ur music on a external hardisk.

Shortlisted models.

Based on your opinions, it seems that buying from the poly exhibition will be the ideal. I have short-listed a few models that I am interested in. Please advise on these models.

ASUS X550 NP $1,313.96(Please advise on it's battery life as it is not stated on the brochure) (seems heavy. 2.4kg
AsiaPac Online Order

Fujitsu LIFEBOOK AH555 BNP $1,281.86(Seems heavy. 2.4kg)
AsiaPac Online Order

Dell™ Inspiron 7447 $1,175.90(slightly lighter but still 2.2kg..) (May not be ideal as I want a number pad on the keyboard)
Gain City | Your Trusted Choice

Lenovo Yoga 3 $1,480(much lighter at 1.7kg.)(however no number pad too)
Welcome to OrderLenovo.com

ThinkPad E440 $1,408(weighs about 2.1kg)(no number pad also..)(No link for this one. Use NYP link.)
http://www.nyp.edu.sg/nyp/slot/u179/current%20students/pdfs/Notebook%20ownership/lenovo.pdf

The Asus ZenBook UX305 $999 caught my eye at it's price too but it's not sold at the poly and I am not sure if the Processor will be fast enough..

Carrying the laptop from NorthEast all the way to NP and back is gonna be crazy and weight will really be a deciding factor.. Please advise on those laptops. Thank you guys for the helpful replies!!

most laptop doesn't have number pad
if there is, the function will be embedded within some keys and need to activate numlock to use except for those gaming laptop
i would recommend the X550 and dell 7447 as it is quad core and have decent graphic if you ever need to game casually

if you are looking for lightweight, usually those comes with the low power consumption processor and intel graphic, the processor might be slower after a few years

get the Dell™ Inspiron 7447. although not using ssd but the good point is the 1TB hybrid drive. more space for u to install softwares, some games n songs too. if u are going to open many softwares at once it good to go for the i7 quadcore processor.
