Polytechnic Laptops

So, I am offered a place in RP.
So they got this few laptops that the school sells.

rp.edu.sg/notebook

Am looking at the Lenovo Ideapad y400
Which might be my first priority.

So could you guys give me suggestions whether are the any other laptop(listed in that webpage) is better then the Lenovo?

And if there ain't any, can you tell me which might be the second and third best choice?

P.s. Am hoping to play games with the Lenovo also.

My friend recommended me on Asus, but I have no idea which Asus to target at.

I'm not a pro in computer stuffs.

Just go for the lenovo i also recommend my friend to get that laptop, is weight a matter to you and what type of games will you be playing? Btw you what course?

In poly, either get:

1) Lenovo Ideapad
2) Lenovo Thinkpad
3) Macbook (If you love OSX. But if your course does not require it, you may have to dual boot)

For gaming purposes, Lenovo Ideapad Y400 is the best choice offered from any current poly road show. For the same price I don't think you can get the same specs for Asus. The closest will be Asus N46VZ but it costs $1498.

Some comparison for these two 2 laptops:
- Y400 has 3 years local warranty while N46VZ has 2 years international warranty
- GT 650M on Y400 has DDR5 VRAM but slower clock speed while GT 650M on N46VZ has DDR3 VRAM but higher clock speed. For playing games on 1366x768 resolution, GT 650M DDR3 should performs slightly better
- N46VZ has external subwoofer & the speaker should be better and louder than Y400
- Y400 has red light backlit keyboard while N46VZ has white light backlit keyboard
- Y400 is slightly heavier by 0.09g compared to N46VZ
- Y400 has mSATA SSD slot
- Y400 has an option for SLI graphics card but it will costs quite a lot for the additional graphics card and larger charger adapter
- Y400 has more complains on some issues like wireless, touchpad etc problems

Just for your information some people prefer to avoid Ideapad series because the warranty is under Megalink where always no ready parts for servicing. Unlike the Thinkpad series, it is great because still under IBM. If you got more budget, prefer lighter laptop, able to play latest games in medium-ultra settings and good reliability, I suggest you go for AFTERSHOCK PC | AFTERSHOCK X11. If you prefer the most worth value laptop and don't mind to play any games on low-medium settings, you can go for Asus S46CM/S46CB. CM is the older model with i5-3317U processor and GT 635M graphics card while ** is the current model with i5-3337U processor and GT 740M graphics card. S46CM costs $999 and S46CB costs $1049. Both laptop weights 2kg and the charger is much smaller and lighter compared to normal laptops.

I went for the Ideapad, and damn it's really heavy.
But damn cool on my games which runs pretty good.
Currently doesn't have any problems which people complained about them.. Will see what happens in the future 3 years.

I wanted get thinkpad but it was too expensive for me.

I'm in Dip in Outdoor and Adventure Learning. So I don't think we require any MacBook, though its accessories are easier to look for..

Btw just asking, which model or brand of cooling fan is good?
Though it's cooling system is good, I don't want to have any risk of it overheating.

Cooling fan not really necessary but if you still insists can get cooler master one. Just make sure don't use the laptop on bed since it can collects dust easily.

Haha lucky my house near RP :x i also dont like to carry heavy thing that why i trade my alienware m14x for msi ge 60 which is much more lighter. Try get cooler master cooling fan. Lucky my laptop can on the in build cooler fan that why i nvr use cooling fan while using.

Sometimes it's not that you can't carry a heavy laptop, but the weather is already quite a pain.

What matters is not living far, but living in an awkward location. Living far means public transport... where I live, it takes just as long to walk to NUS as it does to take all the connecting services (even with Circle Line). After 4 years of consistent 25-min walks to school in rain and shine, you really yearn for something at least half a kg lighter after that.

2.5kg + The adapter + Some other junk wires I bring for my Beats wireless and the portable charger for my iPhone5. With my jacket and pencil case.
I think that adds up to 3kg.

The journey to school is not that bad. I get bus all the way from home.
But the journey back home is horrendous. That up slope track back up to the MRT. And I have to cross opposite for the bus.
Considering I'm in SHL and most probably signing up some energy spending IG.
3 years of this, and I wonder could I really keep up with 3kg.

Btw, cooler master which model?
I see so many kinds my eyes go @.@
I'm not good in any electronic stuffs seriously.

Yours is different case I guess. I don't mind walk long distance while carrying heavy stuff as long the path got cover for rain
I'm using MSI GE60 but now kinda regret since I still can carry heavier stuff... May be gonna change to Aftershock X15/17 if my classamate buying my laptop and I still got mood for gaming.

Not really sure which model coz I don't use also. You can just go Challenger and try which one you prefer.

if there is a lighter option, of course people will take it.

I had suggested Asus S46CM for TS which weights lighter around 2kg, in the end she chosen Lenovo Ideapad Y400

Also, Macbooks are compatible. At lease 90% of them are. I've had no problems with them and no complaints from the customers. Battery life 'may' decrease, but blame it on Windows OS because the way iOS works is different from Windows, hence different power consumption.
