pop sound is created when the capacitor blow up. It could be mobo capacitor or psu capacitor.....
u do a visual inspection on the mobo or psu to conclude your finding.
In some cases, u can see white smoke or smell burning smell when it happens.

Usually is power supply gone, which brand are you currently using?
I would recommend Corsair SFX, Seasonic SFX seems like shops stop selling them anymore.

experienced both before. if PSU popped usually will have obvious burnt smell immediately.
for mobo screen through the capacitors/chips for burnt / black mark

I had instances of random popping sounds whenever I boot up my PC for months. The PC continued to function normally over that period and I did my usual troubleshooting and visual checks on the motherboard. Everything looked fine, no burnt marks/smell till one day, the PC couldn't boot up and later established that it was my 7 years old PSU went burst. So it could be a rare case where the PSU went pop but somehow, it continued to power the system till it gave up.

Faulty PSU can still power on but it's not advisable.
Who knows it may take out other components as well.

Yes, absolutely spot on.

Back then, I had assumed it was my speakers that gave off the pop sounds and failed to attributed it might linked to the PSU. Fortunately, nothing gets burn/causes further damages to the rest of the components.

If it was me I'd just buy a Super Flower Legion HX for $99 or even a FSP HV Pro for $60+. No point spending so much on an older system, 1060 also don't need that much power.
