Hi guys

My portable HDD suddenly cannot be detected. I plugged it in at first to transfer some files but it seemed to hang. I tried to eject it but nothing happened and the window explorer window just froze. So I plugged it out and plugged it back in but it was still the same.

I then tried to shut down my computer only to notice that it was taking a long time to shut down and hence plugged out the HDD after which it shutdown immediately as per normal.

However after switching it back on, the HDD couldn't be detected when I plugged it back in.

Things I tried:

Switching USB ports
Plugging it into my other laptop
Plug it waited overnight

Spinning can be heard when I plug in the hard disk but nothing seems to be detected.

Edit: Finally back from camp, tried plugging it in again to try if it works, it now shows up under file manager but doesn't show up under my computer. Tried to 'Uninstall' it and then 'Scan for Hardware Changes' but still doesn't work. RMA time?

Edit 2: the deng deng sound can be heard when I plug it in but nothing pops up

Thanks!

If your portal HDD is DIY, remove the HDD and direct connect to sata port on desktop PC and see if detectable.

For off the shelf portal HDD, opening the casing will void the warranty.

Have you tried new USB cable? Last time my WD portable HDD i thought it died... turned out it was the cable.

If the following tests failed, time to RMA:
1. use another USB cable
2. plug into another desktop/laptop

Nope it doesn't hang when I plug it in. It can be detected under device manager but does show up under my computer.

I've tried plugging it into my laptop but it's the same result as my desktop, there is the sound that plays when you plug something into USB and it shows up under device manager, but it can't be found under 'my computer'.

I'll look around for another same cable when I next book out. Only have the original one that came with the HDD /:
