Any reliability issue between the two? Is the desktop one more durable or last longer than the other?

My 500gb WD desktop external HDD last me for about 6 years but still working, however i think it is time to get a new one. Not sure if the portable is good enough to last 5-6 years.

Reliability-wise, if you're a frequent traveler then portable HDD is the one to go! If you don't travel much, it would be better to have a external HDD as price is always cheaper.

As for durability of both HDD, as long as you treat portable HDD as external HDD and don't move your HDD much then your HDD should last as long as external HDD - vice-versa. Also try to not have your HDD shake about (especially cases when traveling) and also do not move your HDD about when transferring files*(important), just keep it still when transferring files, if it seems like your HDD is going to fall or something like that, just cancel transfer files first before moving your HDD.
