Question

Mr Fadli Fawzi: To ask the Prime Minister and Minister for Finance whether there are any plans to issue a new series of banknotes for the Singapore dollar with updated safety and anti-counterfeiting features, given that the current Portrait series has been in circulation for over 25 years, longer than any previous series of banknotes.

Answer by Mr Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, and Chairman of MAS:

1. MAS monitors the incidences and methods of counterfeiting, and assesses the robustness of the security features of our notes against these techniques. While new security features available are an improvement, we have assessed that the existing security features remain effective against prevailing counterfeiting techniques. MAS also tracks the counterfeit rate of Singapore currency notes, which is very low compared to those of key global currencies. We cannot be complacent and will be vigilant to counterfeiting risks, ensuring that our security features continue to be effective.

Not directly answered, but it seems like MAS is not going to have a new banknote series anytime soon. The Portrait series could last 30 years or more.

If there are any banknotes in circulation signed by Lawrence Wong or Gan Kim Yong, I haven't seen them. No banknotes printed at least since 2023?

Cash transactions are declining, but ang bao envelopes seem as popular as ever. Maybe MAS should retire some denominations and issue a new $8 note?🤔

He also asked about the one cent coin

I read before that a country’s banknote is a representation of its stability and people’s trust

it also takes years of planning before launch of new series of bank notes and it must display national identity and cultural continuity

not suka suka ask change then change

There also no shortage of commemorative issues in recent years that broke my piggy bank

first SG50 (2015 doh), then Brunei-Singapore CIA 50th anniversary (2017), Bicentennial $20 notes (2019) in quick succession…

before that was CIA 40th anniversary in 2007… an 8-year gap

Was looking forward to a first $60 notes for SG60 just like Malaysia big format 60 ringgit notes

but guess Singapore doesn’t want to copy cat

Next possibility commemorative notes might coincide with Grand Opening of Founder’s Memorial

Most commonly used currencies have updated their banknote designs within the last 10 plus years. The oldest is probably the US dollar but even then the new USD100 note design was issued in 2013.

Gen Z Singaporeans do not recognize this note
