When do I need a more expensive powered USB hub compared to a cheaper non-powered one?

I plan to connect the USB hub to a laptop for more USB ports for plugging in more flash drives.

For flash drives, I doubt u need powered ones. Maybe powered ones is for portable HDD? I'm using non powered one for connecting my diff phones and tablets.

Re

When you are at a desk with AC supply, like at home, then you use a powered USB hub

For OTG users normally you'll use a non-powered USB hub

for usb3 flashdrive you should get powered because it use more than 1A when writing, so having multiple of them there is insufficient power

This depend on your needs and number of devices to connect at any one time.
Powered HUB is good for external USB drives and printers where it boost the reliability.
That is if not enough USB ports on the laptop itself.
Do note that for mouse and keyboard it is best to use USB 2.0 port only.
