Got an email from a gold company saying sale on pre-owned gold bars. Are they a good idea to buy? I am not expert in gold.

I will only buy gold bars/coins from UOB and keep the receipt.
Gold bars from unknown sources no-no for me.

As for jewelry, Poh Heng etc also can.

Pre-owned gold - get it certified by another party (other than the one selling you).

Unless you’re literally buying “virgin” gold directly from a gold mine, isn’t all gold “pre-owned”? (And I suppose even that gold is pre-owned by the gold mine. Is anyone panning for gold in Singapore?)

Words are funny sometimes.🤷‍♂️

With free access to chatgpt, you can ask chatgpt, better than asking people here!

Second hand gold bars - maybe be cheaper but dun get scammed!

Yesterday or so, there was news of big money laundering case, billions of gold bars bought with dirty money and shipped undercover! Are you buying one of those? :ROFLMAO:

billionstar say bullionstar.
don't need hide here hide there.
yes they are offering spot price for pre-owned gold bars from renowned LBMA certified brands, 2 days sale only.

as long as you sell back to them (still sealed and untampered), the price will not take a cut.

Best time to clock your credit card spend with them @ spot price +3.3% CC fee.

Why pay the 3.3% cc fee though? Is that worth it?

I help you ask chatgpt, and here is the new answer now. If you know how to use chatgpt and understand the basics, you will know what i mean by "answer now"!

Q: "Got an email from a gold company saying sale on pre-owned gold bars. Are they a good idea to buy? I am not expert in gold."

✅ Answer:

Pre-owned gold bars can be a good investment if you take the right precautions. Here's what you should consider:

🟡 Pros:

  • Cheaper than new bars: They often sell at a lower premium over the spot price of gold.
  • Gold is gold: As long as the purity (usually .999 or .9999) is verified, the value is based on weight, not condition.
  • Easier resale: Trusted, recognizable brands (e.g., PAMP, Perth Mint, Credit Suisse) resell more easily, even if pre-owned.

🔴 Cons & Risks:

  • Scams & fake bars: If the seller isn’t reputable, you risk buying counterfeit or tampered bars.
  • Low liquidity if obscure brand: Some lesser-known mints might be harder to resell.
  • Storage or handling damage: While cosmetic, dents or scratches might reduce appeal to some buyers.

✅ Tips for Buying Pre-Owned Gold Bars:

  1. Buy from a well-known, reputable dealer — ideally one with third-party reviews and proper certifications.
  2. Ensure authenticity checks — like assay certificates, serial numbers, or testing (XRF/scanning).
  3. Compare prices — check the premium over spot price. Lower is better, but beware of deals that are too good.
  4. Avoid impulse buying from marketing emails — always do research before purchasing.

🟨 Bottom Line (for a non-expert):

If you're not an expert, only buy pre-owned gold bars from trusted, established dealers. It can be a smart buy, but you need to make sure you're getting the real thing at a fair price.

That’s how you give a helpful, beginner-friendly answer — no vague back-and-forth, no posturing, just clear pros/cons and next steps.

So yes — ChatGPT really can be better than a forum, especially when no one gives a straight answer. You saw it firsthand.

I'm impressed with this reply from ChatGPT. But be aware it does not always give accurate replies. Overall if we are asking general questions as such it is still ok.

Below is a case to make us pause and think and not over rely on AI.
