Preparing rig for Win 11

hi pals , since support for Win 10 is ending in Oct 2025.

need to plan upgrade my rig for Win 11.

usage: office processing , youtube , netflix.

can recommend specs?
~ my budget under $500 bah
~ wish to retain my casing , HDDs x 2

if u want to change as little as possible, u can just get a 5600g + am4 motherboard combo to replace ur g4560 + h110, can be had for about $300. u can even reuse ur existing stick of 8gb ram and sata ssd.

In short, I install the Pc Health check and it says my system is ok for Win 11, except need to covert MBR to GPT.

As the Win 10 support is ending this Oct 2025, I'm in a little panic mode.

I'm very happy with Win 10 right now and everything is nice and stable.

I've read many horror stories about Win 11 being laggy and etc.

Not sure what is the exact implications of remaining on Win 10 after the October deadline?

can just continue to use windows 10 till all your "important application" does not support update for windows 10. so long you still have good antivirus program protected.

Is not convert MBR to GPT, I think you didn't realize when you install in Legacy mode.

Legacy boot you will see this screen if you install Windows on UEFI mode.
It will be for example ASUS logo than desktop.
I think you assume just convert the disk partition to GPT than can install Windows 11.

While in fact UEFI mode has many benefit including:
- Faster boot time than Legacy mode
- UEFI supports Secure boot this is to ensure hackers won't hack your PC by BIOS level.
- GPT can support bigger disk space more than 2TB and above.

By saying this even if you don't want to install Windows 11, you must install Windows 10 on UEFI
so your PC will run much faster. We have gone pass Windows 7 where UEFI implementation was still not widely adopted until Windows 10.

Backup your PC than do a installation of Windows 10 on UEFI you will definetely see improvement
especially boot time.
BTW I think best for you to create another thread.

For your PC, there's absolutely no problem running windows 11 24h2.

Find a place to do it for you with a clean install. BIOS secure boot enabled, use fTPM / Intel PTT toggle in BIOS.
Clean install 24H2.

1. Get a decent Samsung/Crucial/SK Hynix NVMe SSD. (PCIe 4/PCIe 3, fallback to 3.0 mode)
2. De-dust and clean up
3. Get one more stick of discount DDR4 RAM, upgrade it up to 16gb, used or new Samsung/Hynix/Crucial green/black stick
4. Buy a entry level 4050/4060 level GPU that needs no ATX auxiliary power, or intel arc
(for new media codec decoding/encoding)

If necessary, upgrade to a i5 or i7 6th or 7th gen chip on taobao, tray, used.

Find a shop that knows what they're doing that charges $150 or less for labour. If done correctly, a W10 native PC will run faster on W11 24H2 when clean installed correctly.

But then I follow some youtube videos on Win 10 install and no mentioned on UEFI / Legacy boot.
No wonder I always feel my boot up time is not as fast as what was posted on youtube videos.

Think I no choice need to install Win 11 liao. Clean install. Think use the Rufus method.
Also check videos on install win 11 using UEFI mode.

But now I got another worry is my 16gb ram (DDR4 8gbx2) might be too modest for Win 11.
I just come to know DDR4 rams are obsolete soon.
CPU is AMD R5 5600G, which I think is ok.
Mobo is Asrock A520M/ac....which many of you don't like....only 2 ram slots
Primary boot SSD: NVME Crucial P310 2TB.

It had served me well so far. Bought just before CNY 2025.

Would have no issues supporting windows 11 24h2 and future windows 12 most probably, based on the same kernel.

1. BIOS reset to defaults: toggle to SPI TPM 2.0, Asrock app shop in tools or extras disabled, secure boot enabled
2. Move personal files to an external drive
3. Make rufus ISO with only privacy toggle and bitlocker (if SSD doesn't support eDrive or TCG Opal 2.0, hardware encryption), clean install
4. Get up to date drivers, vega and polaris have been moved to AMD's legacy driver support branch, WDDM 3.1 support max

Unfortunately, AMD did worse in driver support in absolute number of years than NVIDIA and Intel this round. They could have easily bumped vega/polaris to WDDM 3.2 GPU drivers supporting more modern features than leaving it on WDDM 3.1.

Find someone who knows how to apply it to assist you physically than remotely to avoid unexpected problems. If you have the checklist, there should be no issues.

If the driver really appears broken beyond repair in 24H2 or later, consider just getting a budget dGPU and disable iGPU in BIOS to hide iGPU driver problems and incompatibility if any arise.

yes, use the rufus method to create installation drive, because u can pick the option to disable things like encryption, online requirement etc, no need to manually do

no AI
no MS store (can be reinstalled)
encryption disabled by default
reserved storage disabled (mainly for windows updates so PCs with very little storage space left on C: drive can update properly. useless if you have tons of space left)
offline account (can still login to your MS account)
TPM/Secure boot not required (will still use if your PC supports)

space taken with latest updates = 9.5GB
ram usage = 1.7GB

I think you just do a clean install of Windows 11.
When you install press F11 than boot into USB by UEFI.
Example the boot menu should show UEFI Sandisk something.

I see no issues with your setup so don't need Rufus to bypass.
And yes like some say disable the following after a clean install:

- Memory integrity
- Bitlocker/Encryption

Take note some rigs may not have any of these options enabled by default.
These options can be disabled when you install Windows go under Windows security.
Do also remember to install the drivers:

- AMD Chipset driver

Download the latest from AMD website as Asrock one is out of date.

- Graphic card driver.

To install drivers properly best to install Windows offline by disconnecting from internet.
When the setup prompt you to sign in you can bypass it using a command.

Recommend to update BIOS if you know how to do as V1.90 has support for Windows 11
meaning by default certain options like secure boot and TPM are enabled by default.
Skip BIOS update if you are not sure as Asrock mobo tend to brick if done wrongly.

DDR4 won't be obsolete is just that coming soon manufacturer will stop selling.
If you want to upgrade do it now cuz at a point DDR4 prices will shoot very high.

I don't recommend typical user to install enterprise version, because a lot of consumer software will presume that users have the packages that come with consumer version of windows.

I saw some encounters where some don't have certain service because they remove it, and end up don't even have error message when trying to use software that need the service, they don't even know the cause until i troubleshoot.

esp over here in this forum i notice most troubleshooting and comprehension ability is very low, regardless of their acc age.

Your system is good enough for Win11. My PC is also running 16GB RAM.
Back all your data files before you start.
1. Convert your SSD from MBR to GPT
2. Download the Window 11 Installation Assistant and run (Using this method, you still can revert back to Win 10 within 10 days)
3. If you want a local account then watch the 2nd video. It's a hustle to always login into Microsoft whenever you login to your Windows 11.

This video is important and do not miss any step.

By pass Microsoft account and use local account.
During the installation and it asks "Is this the right country or region?"
Press : Shift + F10
The command line will appear. Type in or cut & paste

Think to save the hassle, I just get a new SSD for installation of Win 11.
In case anything happened or I don't like Win 11, I can still slot back the original SSD for use.
I have the NVME SSD enclosure, so can do file transfer from the original SSD if Win 11 installation is successful on the new one.
