Hi All

I bought a second hand mid 2010 Macbook Pro that came without a hard disk. To make the Macbook run, i bought a hard disk, intalled it, and tried to install the OSX Snow Leopard. However, after trying to install the OS, only the install icon came out. No hard disk icon came out. After clicking on the install os icon, The screen just remains white with the apple logo. Tried searching online, and it seems the problem may be with the hard disk or the cable.

Anyone out there who is able to help?

It's normal for the new hard disk not appearing in startup manager. It will only appear in startup manager if the hard drive is formatted properly to boot in Mac OS X.

Mind sharing how you prepared the installer disk?

prepare a usb with Partmagic or Gparted on, and format the disk to hfs+

You can use the utilities CD that came with it to use the disk utility app and format the HDD..

Hey guys, my 2011 mbp 13 inch harddisk has broken down. May I know what type of harddisk should I buy to replace it? The default one is 5400rpm. Is it ok if I replace it with a 7200rpm one? Lastly, can I use any type of harddisk, or must it be preformatted for mac compatibility before I can install the OSX? Thanks

Are you very sure it's the Hard drive? It's known that the 13" 2011 MBP hard drive cable fails quickly. I just replaced one for a client not too long ago.

To be sure, remove the internal HDD and connect it to your mac using a HDD enclosure or a SATA to USB adaptor.

Yes you can install any standard 2.5" SATA HDD 5400rpm or 7200rpm will work, even an SSD if you want to.

if you can't afford a SSD i strongly suggest you a hybrid ssd/hdd at least boot and loading of most used sw are sensibly improved

I bought the HDD cable from a shop in SLS, it cost me $55. Infinique Services #04-04

Another shop quoted me $70 and quite persistent on fixing it for me so that they can charge more although I was clear to them that i just want to be the parts.

Kenny from Infinique services was straight honest and even offered me 1 month warranty for the part. the price was not too far off from online shops as well - just make sure you have the part number ready because he stores the parts in boxes and labeled with part numbers.

1. You need to know the exact model of your mac: go to Lookup Mac Specs By Serial Number, Order, Model & EMC Number, Model ID @ EveryMac.com to find out

2. After that you can go to ifixit.com to look for the guide on replacing the Hard Drive cable, the guide will also show the exact part number of the cable which you need to buy.

You need to be careful when replacing the cable because the cable is very filmsy.

Before you do all these, just confirm that the hard drive works okay when booted using USB or another SATA controller if there's any.
