Hi fellow bros, am in need of some advice here. Planning to buy a proposal ring soon but not sure where to start. For sure I don't wanna go to those Goldheart & Love & co brands to be their carrot... I am ok and I am sure my fiancee-to-be won't mind those bespoke non-branded ones as long as it's the same thing really.

Scanning through this thread quite a bit... turns out that a lot of you guys are going into diamond analysis and such? Walao that's rocket science with all the whatever scopes u guys are saying. Hmm anyway how do u suggest I start? I have been reading up some general stuff about the 4cs blah blah..

A good start is to ready more tutorial about diamonds. There are many online articles about them. From there, you will learn about why everyone is fussing over the Cut which is the most important C. The other 3C is up to you how you want to prioritize them.

I think Cut itself will take about 80% of your reading time.. lol
There's just so much information about it. A favorite tool that most bros use here is the HCA tool tool to check if the diamond proportion is ok. But beware of HCA scores which can be misleading. It should be an elimination tool and not a selector tool. The decision making tool is to use the scopes to check light performance.

Hi guys,

I went to JP today to get my engagement ring with my SO. Was quoted around 18k (inclusive of setting) for the following specs:

1.161 carat, HCA 1.2, F, VS1 Super Ideal diamond.

Light Performance: AGS Ideal 0
Polish: AGS Ideal 0
Symmetry: AGS Ideal 0

Tiny crystal and needle on the table.

Is this ok?

Your stone sounds familiar... is the cert dated Apr 2010? Just guessing...=:p

One more thing, the cert is dated in Oct 2011, is there any concern for this?

2011 should be ok la.

Not forgetting that JP does buy back diamonds though... not saying the stone in question is lah... =:p Here's quoting an appraiser's reply "Diamonds aren't perishable so there's nothing inherently wrong with a stone that's been sitting around for a while. The issue is what has happend to it during that time. Maybe it's been sitting in the dealers safe and maybe it's been on someone's finger. Ask. "

Some bros here have managed to get rings from JP less than 2k before. See what your looking for

JP has a youtube channel full of diamond buying tips and education stuff. Might be helpful to you.

Yes, that's the one. I have been pondering about the date too. Is there something I need to know about this stone? If so I will gladly be on all ears about it. I haven't really decided on this stone, am waiting for them to send me the scope pics.

I think many are aiming for the perfect (or as perfect as possible) diamond. For me i think if my eye see blink blink, scope look thru ok for me, pricing comfortable, GIA cert met my criteria, HCA score not too bad. Didnt buy from any of the shops mention here.

0.52 E VS1 excellent cut, $3350. I happy, wallet happy, hope my future wife also happy with it haha.

You can consider recertifying it. Though I'm not sure if JP will do it. Or you can change to another stone if it bothers you. As long as they did not start making your ring casing, you can swap the diamond.. I was fickle minded about my budget and swapped mine to go for a bigger one :o

How long can I reserve a diamond for? We placed a deposit on Sunday but I had asked them to help me source for a bigger stone, and Michelle mentioned that it may take around a month or so.

I changed mine after a couple of months. If I rem correctly, JP told me before is if they start on the ring crafting then cannot change already.

Actually I Kind of agree with you. I went to JP and yes they sell really good quality diamonds. But I don't really need a scope in reality do I? I went to gold heart with my gf and she was fine with the cheap ones also, in fact we put the celestial rings beside some some ring (0.5c), and honestly we both couldn't really see the great difference. Makes me wonder if I should really be so particular about the diamond...

How much does larry sell their lazare diamonds? Can I get a 0.5c under 5k? With good specs.

One thing your forgetting is when you compare the diamonds, they are inside the shop. and all the shops uses LED lights. With that kinda lighting, its super hard to tell la. Even a swavorski crystal can look like a real diamond. When you take out the diamond and see under normal and outside lighting, thats where the magic happens A good quality diamond will still have the constant sparkle while the other lower quality ones will look different.

How I know?

Cos I always observe my wife's ring against her other friends. One of them was even a Tiffany. Can clearly see her diamond outshining the rest (even though her one is smaller). But of course when we go to places with LED lights, they all look the same already...

If have the chance, compare the diamonds in various lights and not LED. That's the real test :)

PS. I got a JP diamond

I was thinking of getting the diamond then setting the diamond in a ring at a shop, is this the common practise?

Best practise is compare the pros and cons.

Online
pros
- can be slightly cheaper
- wide selection

cons
- cannot see the diamond beforehand
- no quality check
- no after-sales service

Shop
pros
- can see diamond beforehand
- can check for quality of diamond first
- have after sales service

cons
- can be slightly more expensive

Diamonds online can be good and bad.. but also depend on luck. I read that some diamonds can be problematic like milky or brown (won't show on the cert). So you won't know until you receive the diamond. So quality check is very limited. If you know the precise ring size, you're lucky. If you don't you will need to resize it locally and pay additional $$. Some shops got give aftersales service like free resizing and repolishing, etc. Those are the added value service from local shops.

Not all shops are willing to do the setting if you didn't buy from them. and even if they do, most often they charge higher price. So that kinda off sets the savings you earn.

I considered online too and compared the pricing. If I bought mine online, it could save me a few hundred dollars than buying from JP. In the end, I decided for JP for the quality assurance that I'm getting a Super Ideal quality and if you include their after-services, the value becomes about the same.

One thing I like about online is their 30 days money back guarantee. But then again, look at the terms. You need to include the shipping and insurance costs that you have to bear, and you paid tax on the diamond already. So you will lose the shipping cost and tax cost if you return it.
