Hello all,
I'm looking for a proposal ring for gf by apr1. I have been reading alot of reviews on jp n their types of diamond.
Had my eyes on solasfera but Just wondering if i have a budget of 5k, what kind of specs would i be able to get? No preference on priority of the 4Cs though.
Bro. Just drop by JP. No obligation. Just sit down and listen to them introduce to you about diamond and then they recommend based on your budget. Should probably take about an hour or slightly lesser.

Before that you can walk around other areas/shops as well. I only mention drop by JP since you mentioned it. :)

Just a note. I did mine at JP. Need to note my collection was during the busy Christmas period. From the day I made my deposit to collection was about 30 days.

Anyone know about Orro? Seems to pop up regularly on my fb nowadays. Two outlets in Orchard. Another high street brand?

Hello all,

I'm new to all these diamond thing and my gf is kinda pro at these(so I can't randomly buy which I think is nice as a proposal haha). I would like to do some research, where will be a good place to start?

As I'm still a student, having a budget of about 2-3k can I get a decent one?

Thanks in advance :)

Yes, I did dropped by and was served by Sam. Nice guy and no obligations to get it. (though he spoke quite soft and fast for me :O)

But did learn alot on the diamonds.

Where else did you guys compare to before making the decision? :D (except retails)

anyway, experts here. any recommendation on wedding band? proposal ring was from JP. but at that point of time, didn't ask them about the package/pricing for wedding band.

Thats precisely what I don't know how to determine a "decent" diamond. :s13:

Imho, "decent" is a GIA triple excellent or AGS triple 0, color D-F, clarity FL-VS2. For normal round brilliant cut (57 facets), a HCA of <2.0 would be preferable.

Those who have been "educated" by JP would try to convince u of a more stringent standard, but it is best to judge with your own eyes. You may not want to pay a premium for a stone that is better on paper but look no different to the naked eye. With a $2-3k budget, should try to strike a balance between size and quality.

Spoken like a pro! :)

I'm definitely no pro so just sharing what I have done and would have done if given a choice again. :s13:

Imho, shopping for wedding band is more about finding the design that you like (unless u going for custom made design) and not so much about which shop better. Some bands may be 18k gold while others may be 16k etc. so need to ask. Quality of the little diamonds may or may not make much difference (cos they are small).

After looking through all the bands from the major chain shops, in the end we ended up buying ours from Lee Hwa for about $1.6k in mid 2014. :)

2-3k can get a Super Ideal cut around 0.4carat+ already. Bigger or smaller depends on how high you want color and clarity. For the same budget, you can also consider other special cuts like the cushion Brellia or Solasfera.. Quite a number of bros got those.

Best way to start is to research what makes a diamond sparkle etc. and how to use the scopes etc. Don't just rely on your own eyes to judge if the diamond is good. Shops like to trick people by using those strong lights to make the diamond look "good". So end up all diamonds look about the same when you see them in the store. The real deal is when you see the diamond without these trick lighting. Problem is shops don't let you take the diamonds out of the store to see how the diamond truly looks like. So this is why people use the ideal scope, aset scope, etc. to check.

Went to quite a few places when looking for mine and notice all the other stores do not use the scopes at all... When I view the diamonds under scopes, I can see the difference in symmetry and light return. I take a closer look at the diamond without the scopes.. Then I understand y one look brighter and more blingbling than the other!

I dropped by JannPaul a couple of days ago for a free diamond education session and the experience was so great that I felt obliged to give a short write up of my visit there.

I was attended to by Casey, who patiently explained all there is to know about diamonds which I found very informative as I have to admit I am a total noob when it comes to diamonds.

I was first introduced to the different scopes they use, namely the ASET Scope, the Ideal Scope, and the Hearts and Arrows Scope which are used with a light box. Both the ASET and Ideal Scope are used to indicate the light performance of the diamonds and the Hearts and Arrows Scope is used to view the hearts and arrows In a diamond. One more useful tool is the Holloway Cut Adviser which can used in conjunction with the GIA cert to estimate a round diamonds appeal based on its potential Light Return, Fire, Scintillation and Spread. It can be found at Holloway Cut Adviser | HCA Tool | PriceScope

JannPaul offers many different diamond cuts, but my favourite is the round brilliant cut because the hearts and arrows look so perfect and symmetrical! Hope to pick that out for my girl next year!

Casey shared that they offer 3D customization services and I was surprised to find out that this service provided is so much cheaper than other outlets! I think what sets JannPaul apart from other outlets is that they are so patient to explain everything in depth, not too technical and not too layman.

I’ll be sure to pay them a visit when I decide to pop the question!
