Pic on the top is my sis’s ring also frm JP 0.43 ct D VVS2 while the ring on the bottom (with swimming pool background) is mine JP 0.52 ct G VS1. Both rings on my finger 44.5 (4.5) size and both diamonds are SIC. TBH cannot really tell the difference though the diamond size. But it’s really kind of waste to get D color and VVS2 cos my diamond G looks very white too hahaa 😂

For colour wise, have to put the stones behind white paper then can see the tint

I've currently narrowed down to these last 2 diamonds based on my budget and some other 4Cs. Anyone able to suggest which I should get?

Thanks!:)

You’ve picked 2 very good choices. I would go with the second option, the 0.504 G VS2. The aset is slightly better.

Here’s what u should do:
- Whiteflash have a chatline or u can email them. Ask then to place the second stone on hold.
- Next ask them to do a photo shoot of the 2 stones
- tell them u want 3 shots, face up side by side, a hand shot with the 2 stones, and a shot face down with side profile on a white board.

U can decide after seeing the shots :)

Oh. This is something new to me, why is it better to pick a 0.6x or 0.7x over a flat 0.70 carat?

The logic behind this is because those flat carat weights don't give good value.
Diamond prices are calculated and grouped into carat weight ranges. In your case, it's on the 0.70-0.89ct. The one before is 0.50-0.69ct. So the carat weight you want to avoid is 0.50 and 0.70.

sample-of-rap-sheet.png

As long as you are within the carat group, the price incremental is minor. Like 0.70 to 0.71ct is +$100, 0.71-0.72ct is + $100, etc. Then if you want to up by 0.70 to 0.75, it will be like +$500.

If you drop to the bottom group into the 0.50 - 0.69ct, that 0.69 to 0.70 for the 0.01ct difference is not gonna be $100, but rather like $1k-2k? Summore you wont be able to see the size diff. So you might as well pick a 0.6ct+, save a thousand+ dollars with a diamond that looks the same size as the 0.70ct or top up abit more for a 0.7ct++.

Both are round numbers 0.50 leh. They have another one 0.54 in same specs for $150 more but the inclusions on the pics doesnt look good. Like cracks all over the diamond. If you got no deadline, see if you can wait awhile longer for fresher stocks

JP has a video explaining this

The rapaport report provides a benchmark on pricing for jewellers but has very little relevance for consumers.
I have to disagree with the video on the price jump from 0.69 to 0.7c.. is it really a few thousand dollars (at retail)?
I’ve posted the JP price guide previously, yes there are price hikes but it’s not a few thousand.

When you are working with a superideal cut vendor, then the argument that the stone is poorly cut is also less.

Yes, I do agree that since you are already at a certain price tier, might as well go for a premium weight like 0.69c (where possible). But I wouldn’t give up a well cut stone just cos it’s at a flat weight. Unless of course u plan to sell it later..

To put into perspective, the price jump from 2.5c to 3c and above is $20-30k. That’s when u really want to avoid a flat caret weight

In the 0.6 and 0.7 range, I dun think its a few thousand dollars, but it would be at least a thousand. The Octagon 0.61 F VS2 I bought was 5.3k. That time I was considering another 0.66 G VS2 for 5.5k, and 0.72 G VS1 for 7.2k. All of them are Octagons. You can add them in your price list.

I wanted to take the higher 0.66 G VS2 but the color bothered me and I can see abit of the yellowness and settled for the 0.61 F VS2.

The 0.66 G VS2 and 0.72 G VS1 difference is 1.7k. Minus the clarity difference, it would still be about 1k difference for the same specs. In the smaller sizes this difference will even be less. It's all about the % and relative to the total amount. Like a 20% difference for a 0.3ct is perhaps a few hundred only, when the diamond total price is 1k+.

But you need to consider that people that go for the smaller sizes might be working on a budget. So every dollar counts. I can imagine that the larger 1ct+ sizes will have an even bigger effect in many thousands when its % to the price.

1k might be peanuts to someone buying a 1ct, but alot to others that are spending less.

Edit: How come if you plan to sell it later then avoid the flat weight? As in it will retain the price better?

Here’s the recent 2019 rapaport report. Using G, VS2 as a guide, the difference is only $1k and note also that as you reach premium weights prices go up anyway

gawQCV1.jpg

The difference between a 2 to 3 caret however, is $80k (for G, VS2)

If a jeweller takes in your stone at trade in, they may need to polish it. If the caret weight drops, they get less profit as the stone is in the lower price tier. So if u have a flat caret weight for trade in, it’s likely they will base their price on the lower tier

80k is crazy from 2-3 carat. Its like 3ct or 2ct + car :s13:

Tell me if I'm calculating this correctly;

0.50-0.69ct - 36
0.70-0.89ct - 46

The % difference is 46-36=10
Then 10/36 = 0.3 = 30%

So the price per carat difference for a 0.6ct and 0.7ct is 30%.
Then if we take into account the possible 10% premium for a 0.6, the difference is 20%.
In other words, you are paying 20% more when you go over the 0.70 mark.

Icic.. didnt think about it this way. So they will price your 0.70ct in the 0.50-0.69ct price group..

Hey man! Thanks for your quick reply!

I will definitely try to ask them to do that for me!

Cheers!

Thanks for your reply, mate!

Actually I still have a couple of months before I am proposing. How will you know if the stocks are new or not? :/

Pardon. I made a mistake in the calculation.
The rapaport report prices are in hundreds.. and prices per caret.
Therefore using an 0.69c vs 0.71c both G, VS2

- 0.69c x $3600 = $2484 for 0.69c G vs2
- 0.71c x $4600 = $3266 for 0.71c G Vs2

Note that the price premium also goes up as you near the 0.69 weight which I did not add. That’s why I said it’s only a guide as it does not take into account cut or fluorescent so the stones could be traded at -20 or even +20% above rapaport

Mistake: price difference going from 2 to 3caret is therefore $20-30k and not 80k

Yup, the % still works out the same. The 0.69 and 0.71 is abt 30% price diff.

I calculated the 2.9 and 3.0ct. Its a whopping 60% diff! Minus the 10% premium, its still about 50% more

Yup, bigger carets prices rise exponentially.
Big stones are more rare
