so.... I have been a reader for this thread for quite some time now, I should say I have read at least 25% of the content (considering the length of this thread and its predecessors). Anyway today I just made my purchase with JP for an octagon diamond to be used as a proposal ring for my girlfriend. I created another HWZ account for this post just in case my girlfriend is reading this too, as she will most probably recognise my user ID hahahaha!

The stats of my diamond is as follows:
0.644c F VS2 Octagon

Pictures of scopes (any kind soul please help to render the pictures for this forum? :D)

h ttp://i68.tinypic.com/33oty8h.jpg
h ttp://i66.tinypic.com/14ptfk.jpg

Just wondering if anyone has any opinion on this? Any red flags that you have noticed? Comments are always welcome!

Also, my girlfriend and I are actually quite fond of the 6 prong setting. However I was told today that the 6 prong setting would not be ideal for the octagon as the shape may not be distinctive enough. Quite a pity because I love the uniqueness of this cut too! My JP contact is currently in the process of having the 3D done up for a 6 prong setting for the Octagon, but I was just wondering has anyone here tried to approach such a setting? Will be good to hear your experiences! If the 6 prong does not work well, I might then be caught in a dilemma between an octagon on a 4 prong setting, or switching to a SI or Solesfera on the 6 prong. Pity though since I have taken a liking to the diamond I selected!

These apart, the service at JP was really top notch! Will leave this review to a later time after the proposal so I don't accidentally reveal details that may let the cat out of the bag

Thanks in advance for advising on this!

They look good to me~ Look symmetrical and light performance no problem too.

They will do 3D render right? Maybe you can take a look at it first?
Imho, the setting is use to bring out the diamond. Initially I like 6 claw too but I love the Brellia so I chose to do 4 prongs to bring out the shape of the diamond!

@dearmisterj was at JP ytd for the second time . was also considering a 6 prong setting with the solesfera or 6 prong setting with the octagon diamond. Was told that the recommended setting for the octagon diamond would be the 4 prong setting, am ok with that too since was told it'll look weird with 6 prongs. We were looking at 0.41-0.43 ct with side diamonds.. SO says all in a bit burst his budget Since there's no discount...

Thanks @Symbol for the help with the photos! Yes I think I saw your posts some time back regarding the Brellia, you did a wax model of the setting too right? I don't recall seeing the picture of your complete ring though...

Yup yup waiting for the 3Ds to make a decision. This is such a hard decision to make without my girlfriend's opinion since that's really what matters! But I guess its either this or giving the secret away :s13:

@dreamer_jul have you made a decision between the solesfera and the octagon diamond? If not I can post the 3D renders of the 6 prong on the octagon when I receive them so that you can make a decision from there too :s13:

Budget wise I guess there are certain Cs that you could compromise on to ensure that both parties are comfortable! I was quoted a similar octagon with a clarity of IF versus the one I selected which is VS2, and the price difference was almost 1k!

Selected the VS2 in the end because even under the microscope the inclusions were barely visible, and without the microscope I couldn't even tell both diamonds apart :s13: Another option to consider would be a lower color grade.. I would say all of JP's diamonds do seem value for money so I wouldn't worry about not getting a discount since it should already be better than getting from other jewellers :D

Hi guys...

I went into a random shop looking for sapphire to customize into a ring.

I was shown these 2 sapphire.

They are sized at 1.1 carat and 2.2 carat, $2500 and $2900 respectively if they were to be made into a ring with diamonds around it.

I am just about to do some research on sapphires but appreciate if any experts here can comment if there is anything I should look out for.

And how can I check if they are real or artificial?

Thanks in advance!

I've been shopping for a sapphire pendant lately so maybe I can share a bit. My mom recommended On Cheong in Chinatown as she heard they have good range of coloured gems and she was right. You might wanna go down for a look. If they don't have what you're looking for at the shop they can also source w their supplier and get back to you. They also do custom settings.

They have a wide range of stones from good to not so good quality.

From what I understand for sapphires what you should look for is the intensity of the blue (not too dull or too pale) and also the clarity of the stone. Meaning it shouldn't look too cloudy. Also with better clarity it will also have better sparkle.

For sapphire the best stones come from Sri Lanka. Try to find one that has a cert to at least verify it's a real stone. At On Cheong they can send for certification at NGS which is apparently the best local certification. With NGS cert at least it'll be able to tell you real or not and what's the source.

Also for coloured stones oval cut brings out the beauty the most. Not advertising for On Cheong just really impressed with their range and service. Hope that helped!

Hi guys,

Been reading for some time now, and I finally booked an appointment and went down to JP today.

Quotes I received based on my budget (which are all super ideal cut):

0.86/F/VS1 - $9.9k (round)
0.838/F/VS1 - $10.5k (octagon)
0.87/F/VVS1 - $11.6k (round)
0.95/G/VS1 - $12.2k (round)

I can't help but feel that my quotes are on the pricey side considering the above factors. Any advice on the pricing is greatly appreciated!

That's the around the price for the super ideal cuts. My friend got a 0.8ct ideal cut from Lee Hwa for 15k. And it wasn't even a super ideal cut.

Yea it seems rather pricey :S I got quoted $7950 for super ideal 0.75 F VVS2 end of last year. In the end we got a 0.71 E VS1 for $7500.

Maybe try to drop the carat size, to between 0.7-0.79. Dont need to take VVS1 or VVS2 cause VS1 and VS2 is good enough, the inclusions are not visible to naked eye. A smaller carat octagon cost more then a bigger carat Super Ideal due to the shape. So a few factors for you to consider =)

My heart goes to the 0.86c due to the lucky number though. Just felt that $9.9k was on the steep end!😔

Wow the price jumped pretty fast.. My 0.6x stones cost me around 6k
Though I've seen earlier quotes in this thread which places a 1 carat at around 13 to 14k, so I guess the 0.95 price seems just about right. Are these quotes just for the diamond only or with the setting?

I went down today again to have a second look and it was so coincidental that they have got a 1.086c/VS1/F for $16.900!!! My heart is itching so bad now😭

Haha. The 0.95 is a good choice.. unless you have the budget to spare then push to 1. =:p
