It is not that the feather wasn’t impt. It’s just that the more serious inclusion was the crystal followed by the feather.

In general each drop in color is 6-9% cheaper. More discounts with the lower colors. Similar for each clarity drop. So imagine instead of D you picked an I color. That’s a 5 color grade drop. That could be 30-40% discount.

Since u using yellow gold, why pay the premium?

Premium for the 616 ... like me, but I was lucky in getting a G-SI1 for the ct I wanted. :D

616 only possible from AGS cert ... which further limits his choices. BG has 3 616s, but the other 2 are more ex.

How about this 606 G-VS2? Almost SIC dimensions but with a slightly smaller table.

Fear of feathers is abit exaggerated.

U need to evaluate each stone.
The D color is a VS2 of which the feather is NOT the grade setting inclusion.
Versus in the SI1 the feather is.

The reason to go online is the bigger inventory compared to JP.
I have no issue buying the BGD Black but I would not in this case not because of the feather but rather the premium on the color.

I would avoid those problematic feathers though. Inside the diamond is ok but outside is a concern. For my rule of thumb, I'll stay away from any surface inclusions when unsure. Eitherway, the price for the same clarity grade will be the same. So why take the risk when you can get another safer diamond with the same grade and same price? There's not a need to pay more for a better clarity grade. Just need to spend abit more effort to find a better one :s13:

I was responding more to the 0.616

@jonleek has a good example where he found one which signify a date, SI clarity yet does not have worrying feathers.

The reality of finding it within JP/HOH is almost zero as the majority of stones are GIA graded not to mention the limited inventory as compared online.

When u read about feathers, which of these sites are NOT affiliated to getting u to buy a stone? High clarity equals premium price yet diamond prices are falling, India has cut prices and DeBeers are pulling back production, but u will never get the discount. Anyway I digress...

I dun think GIA has changed their grading but feathers are not surface. Cavities can include surface reaching feathers

I read that before too on pricescope
https://www.pricescope.com/articles/diamond_feather_inclusions_durability_risk
In that same article, they also mention

When is a feather a durability issue?

A feather in itself is not a durability issue. A feather is just one of many names given to inclusions in diamonds. Sometimes a feather is totally innocuous and small although it can be a large and dangerous inclusion. The word “feather” alone means very little in describing durability.

What one must look out with feathers in locations and sizes such as might have an effect in creating a weakness in the crystal structure of the diamond so that further opening or breakage might occur. When a feather creates an open fissure through the girdle, near a thin zone, near a pointed tip or sharp corner, there is increased potential for damage or breakage. A large, open feather in the crown or table can be increased in size, thereby lowering the clarity grade and could even lead to total breakage. This is rare, but all damage in diamonds is reasonably a rare event.

Durability issues primarily associate themselves with already existing chips, fractures, extremely thin to very thin girdles, cleavages, very shallow crown angles, sharp corners, shallow pointed tips. It used to include pointed culets, but do to mounting style changes, pointy culets hardly ever become damaged in modern settings. On a secondary level, feathers which break the surface and crystals which break the surface are also somewhat problematic, but not on the level of the primary causes of further or increased damage. Anything which is declared as “open” may effect durability.

Durability can be impacted by internal strain only visible with a polariscope. Again, not a major problem, but one which exists on the fringes.

My take from the article is feather itself is not a problem. It only becomes a problem when its near or on the edge. The result in the diamond damaging is uncommon but possible. So to me, I'm still not willing to take that risk.

The reason why I pointed out the 0.616 is because I saw the clarity plot. The top part has a feather near or on the edge at the upper and bottom half. Then the bottom part of the diamond has multiple feathers all close to the edges. I see that I got scared already. Or maybe that's just me.

The article was not specific to rounds and clearly princess cuts with or without feathers are a chipping risk
Even when considered in rounds it’s in combination with other factors such as an extremely thin girdle.

If the priority is the date. I have no issue with the 0.616 VS2 whereby the feathers are not the primary inclusion. Of course everyone’s risk appetite is different

Proposal success! :D The deal has been sealed!
I've been lurking on this thread and benefited alot from all the bros here. Thank you all for the contribution and knowledge.

Sharing some photos of my ring. Its a 0.63 E VS1 super ideal cut. JP managed to speed up my ring crafting to 3 weeks. Very happy with the outcome and setting design I chose.
The design really brings out the diamond and makes it look bigger. The tapered band does help alot with the 6 prongs crown head. They made the crown head alittle more V shape to bring out the main diamond. All these small little ''tricks'' does help with the size. My gf even thought it was a 1ct at first. hahaha

The diamond itself is super sparking without a doubt. Now I know why you guys are all into the super ideal cut. You really got to just see it yourself to understand.

Only thing is the ring size. Will be going back to JP to resize the ring. Its abit too loose and the diamond keeps rotating around the finger. I used the string and measure method to check her ring size. Don't think its very accurate. lol

Congrats. 3 weeks is a great turnaround time considering the chaos in HK

Thanks. Ya, it actually got delayed in custom for 1 day but JP made the timeline 3 days earlier to factor that in, in case anything happens. So in all, it ended up 2 days earlier. Very impressed with their efficiency and workmanship.

Here's a rough guide which miltah has collated.

Hi bro, I went to JP yesterday and placed my deposit for a 0.58c G VS2 diamond (ideal cut)

The GIA no. is 6271330099. The price is 3.85k. Is the price for this diamond okay? As I saw this price list table shared here and it seems similar spec diamond is around 3.3-3.4k?

Hi all.

I went down to Michael Trio today to have a look at their diamonds. They have something called "Pure Hearts" which seems to be JP's SIC equivalent. Has anyone done a comparison between MT's Pure Hearts and JP's SIC?

MT did not have scopes for me to examine the diamonds, nor did they have the HCA score.

But have to say that the Pure Hearts diamond was really very bright and sparkly. Could be the lighting too.

MT doesn’t use scopes. They use the Sarine light report which is rubbish.

Seems a little ex for an ideal cut

Based on the compilation in the previous pages, it does seem like an expected price for an ideal at 0.63.

Was previously given a quote of 5.4k for a 0.63 F VVS2 SIC.

Can't justify the extra cost (with the naked eye at least) & think it'd be better used on the band.

Of course, we can’t always get the specs we want...

0.56 G VVS2 $3,300 (ideal)
0.58 E VS2 $3,500 (ideal)
0.51 G VVS2 - $3,500
0.54 F VS1 - $3,850
0.53 E VS1 - $3,900
0.52 D VS2 - $3,850
0.52 D VVS2 - $4450
0.63 F VS1 - $4600 ideal
0.63 F VS2, $5100
0.71 G VVS2 $5200 (ideal)
