Hi diamond gurus, I need your kind advice. I have visited JP last week for shopping for my engagement ring. I am quite disappointed that there are only two diamonds available for my budget. Ideally I would like to have the range from 0.45 to 0.49 carat with color F and above with super ideal cut of course. Followings are the diamond that JP presented to me;

1. 0.41 VVS1 E GIA report 7338554745; price 2750
2. 0.514 VVS2 G AGS report 104111767002; price 3500

In online store like, Michael Trio I am able to get similar specs with their pure heart cutting about 1000 less.
Please let me know your opinion on each diamond in terms of quality and pricing. Which will should I go for?

I heard JP does custom cuts. You can consider custom cutting one in your specs in their white series.
Micheal Trio is a drop shipper, they don’t sell real Super Ideals. You see the proportions of their “pure heart cutting”, it’s very bad. Even those 35/41 crown/pavilion or 60/60 table/depth combo can be a pure hearts 🤦🏻. And most of them have fluorescence. It’s to bait ppl in. Just like the James Allen, you won’t know if it’s actual hue and if the fluorescence affecting its cloudiness. But by looking at the proportions alone, you can already tell they’re very far far off even for an Ideal cut.

prices are inline with JP rates

I prefer option 2, $750 more for a 0.1ct upgrade

my personal threshold for colour is G, my naked eye can't pick out the difference between D/E/F/G given that SIC are so bright

usually a few times free resizing.

but also depends on the design and how much it can go down or up. if size difference is too much and the design is complicated then resizing might not be possible

GIA report doesnt really tell alot more as 2 diamond with triple ex on GIA can be quite different. but coming from JP i believe their diamond shd be of quality.

your 0.514 one looks quite good IMO. the flaws are at the side which means u can cover them up using the ring prong. near colorless i think is fine too as you cant really see a difference.

as for online purchase, they shd be cheaper as no rental to pay. but need to be very careful as 2 diamond with the same GIA specs can look different.

Actually not cause they got no rental MT has 2 retail outlets. It's cause they dropship the diamonds through the floating market, like JamesAllen, so they have never inspected the diamonds for color, clarity, fluorescence, etc. problems that all affect the price. But mainly their pure hearts line is even looser than the US online drop shippers. (so basically they all share the same online inventory and brand it, the pictures they have is what the online supply floating market good supply them with).

Yup, besides the fact 2 GIA diamonds can look terribly different, there's the color, clarity, fluorescence, proportion, light return, symmetry, etc. to look out for as well, which you can't tell from the floating market.

So just imagine a middle man, never seen the goods, then upload it.

Usually they would give free resizings with no time period. Then also have free replating and repolishing, and engravings

This is good read if you guys wanna know about the general diamond demand. Its been awhile now..

"Excellent cuts and nice shapes in demand and selling at premiums. Rising orders in China helping the market. Dealers hoping for increased sales of fancy-shape engagement rings as consumers seek alternative designs at lower cost. High availability of fancies below 1 ct. Off-make, poorly cut fancies illiquid and difficult to sell."

"High-end goods outperforming commercial qualities and maintaining prices amid shortages of 4 ct.+, D, IF diamonds. Wholesalers struggling to source matching 1 to 2 ct., G-H, VS-SI pairs for earrings, which are popular gift items."

''Signs of loosening cross-border restrictions, with move to create travel bubble with Singapore. Difficult to find top-quality 1 ct. stones.''

Basically post-covid people are looking for real Super Ideals due to the value retention.

Paul mentioned this in his video awhile back as well that China already bought up alot of good quality diamonds. So this leave the floating market with lots of rubbish.

Hi everyone. New to this page, hope to get some inputs from fellow experts.

Just put in a deposit today to secure a SIC 0.56 D VS1 GIA 6352612995.

Paid 4.4k for it. Did i overpay for it? looking at past replies on this forum, seems like I could get a better cut (decagon albeit a longer wait time) for a lower carat / poorer color at the same price.

Please advise! thanks all :s13:

You watch this video. It's not that the SIC is ex. Its the Decagon is worth it to buy in comparison with the SIC cos there's no branding premium to it. Decagon is abt 10% more than SIC which is equivalent to about 1 color or clarity grade cost difference. So you just drop 1 color/clarity, can get a better cut liao. Summore the White Series will look brighter than the SIC and you can get away with a lower color. Only downside is the waiting time.

If you not proposing so soon, should go for their White series.
