Surgery (incl. pre-op and post-op) is medical but not 100% covered (i would say 95% of total cost covered).
Some pre-op stuff are not covered for dunno wad reasons.

Braces is required (cosmetic) and is not covered (spare a good $5k for this if you haven't done it).

It will be a 1 month MC and dunno how long att B so do plan ahead with your boss.

My advice: Want to do, just do it and must plan at least 1 year in advance before your ORD date with your first visit to the OMS surgeon (especially if you do not have braces).
I managed to rush through with 5 months from ORD date but not recommended (somemore i didnt have braces to begin with).:s22:

why is it not 100% covered?

I guess that the reason is because braces are considered as a cosmetic expense. Even so, I am still quite surprised that cost cover will amount to about 95% - I was expecting only about 60%.

Speculating.

Well, I am not exactly sure how the processes would work out, as this may involve multiple consultations with the relevant specialist in hospital, family, Dental MO (I guess?) and my NS superiors. Right now, I would want to get a total cost breakdown from the specialist, and then get advice from Dental MO, which are the items are not claimable. I also have to get approvals from my superiors though; there are still many uncertainties and due diligence. Ultimately, I can't do it, if the MO, or my superiors say "No, it's too expensive. We won't cover for you".

I think you got my message wrongly haha.

Surgery and braces are 2 separate things, seen by 2 different dentists.

Braces cost (must pay by yourself) is at $5k+ which is quite standard for govt clinic. You can do at private clinic for cheaper price.

Surgery requires the braces (doesn't matter where you do the braces but they will probably recommend that you do it at the same place as the surgery)

Only surgery will be covered but the surgery cost is still not 100% covered. (some pre-operation procedures will not be covered -> amount up to $500 i guess? + If you ORD shortly after surgery, then you will incur quite an amount of Post-operation care costs for regular check-ups and stuff)

Another option is use insurance but I'm sure it covers even lesser than SAF.

As for your second part, they are not the ones paying so they don't really care about the $$. They more concerned about the period you will be off (rmb 1 month MC + 2 month att B) + (at least 5 visits each to surgeon and orthodontist before the surgery on weekdays, spread over few months). The rest is whether you can pay for the braces and misc costs.

You can skip the dental MO one. Just go for wisdom tooth extraction at govt hospital and talk to the dentist there. They got more experience. As long as the dentist approve your surgery (the govt clinic one, not the dental MO) and got you a date for the surgery, they must let you do it but still good to consult them on a suitable date. If you feel responsible for your unit, then plan to do the surgery 1-2 months before ORD for your benefit as well. Usually 1-2 month before ORD is do nothing one.

Well I don't think there's such a thing as agaration of percentages

eh speculating is not the right word to use. and no such thing as too expensive wouldn't cover you. it's either can cover or cannot cover.

If the surgery is not cosmetic in nature, i am pretty sure every procedures will be covered. I believe only ward charges if any you have to pay a percentage of it. anything after ORD is of course not covered*

eh i don't think they can control whether u do surgery or not. It's more like FYI rather than ask.
