Just a quick question. I got a PS4 Slim today and I'm trying to play it on my monitor which does not have a built-in speaker. My computer speakers use a 3.5mm jack. What are some of the ways I can have optical audio output for my PS4? Thanks in advance! :)

A relatively inexpensive option comes to mind would be the Fiio d03k dac. Of course, there are other methods, like getting a monitor with hdmi in, 3.5 jack out, or speakers that accepts optical in directly.

Only option is to connect HDMI from PS4 Slim to Monitor then Monitor to speakers via 3.5mm.

For your PC, you can connect either HDMI or DP to monitor then use the same 3.5mm to speakers.

You can look for those optical audio male connector to 3.5mm female connector, simlim should have lots of those or just buy online provided you can trust those.

Example is something like this:

Either that or get a dac from a reliable and inexpensive brand like fiio as suggested above.

Honestly tho since you already use hdmi to connect to monitor, its probably simplest to just connect the speakers to the monitor for audio output.

Just curious as to why the Fiio D3K dac was recommended. It only has opt in and coax in options. The PS4 Slim only have HDMI out w/ sound option. There is simply no other sound output other than through HDMI.

When you connect some DAC to ps4 via usb, it detects as a headphone. I'm using a creative e5 and it detects it that way.

I'm using the same set up with a creative g5 and optical out to my speakers. Before that I'm using a Bluetooth dongle plug in the ps4 slim and connect to a Bluetooth speaker.

Ok i checked, you were right there is no optical port for PS4 slim, only hdmi, so yeah that option is out.

Then can I ask if something like this would be feasible?

My monitor has audio out but it's a bit troublesome to keep plugging in and taking out the cable from behind the monitor. Also, I'll sometimes connect the ps4 to a projector when I play with friends so it's better to have a dedicated audio option.

PS4 doesn't just operate like a PC and recognize any usb you plug in. That creative device they mentioned happens to work doesn't mean others will, and that is a $100++ dac. If you really want a direct connection from PS4 to speakers, then you'll have to look for a converter with hdmi in and optical/3.5mm/hdmi out, something like this:

Again, try to ask around in simlim, they probably have something similar. This one on the link needs a separate power supply, so try to find one that doesn't need one.

The dumber and cheaper the DAC, the more likely it will work

(Actually means, if it uses standard USB drivers, then it is most likely going to work)

My bad. TS explicitly mentioned optical outputs so I assumed that the ps4 slim comes with(which does not).
